I picked up a food dehydrator at Aldis for $20. What is good dehydrated? I was thinking I would try peaches and pineapple first. 4951

Usually they come with a small instruction manual, that so far, I found indispensable. Make sure your pieces are about the same thickness, or you get uneven drying.If you have a variable temp, make sure you follow their guide linesOn some units swapping the trays around helps even out the drying.Move top to bottom, bottom to top, that kind of thing, about half way through.if you have a fruit leather tray, it's awesome, your DD will love it. Just make sure you blend the fruit well. Applesauce makes awesome fruit leather.Herbs dry nicely, just keep them far away from the hardest blow of the fan, or they move around and clump and don't dry evenly in some machines.I have not had luck with jerky, but it is more a marinade problem than drying, but it is messy as they do drip.A lot of whole fruit (like figs and cherries) you need to cut in half and some like cherries, pit first. 4951

Wouldn't it be terrific to dehydrate ice cream so it doesn't pour down your hand when you eat it with our heat! Like astronaut ice cream at NASA. 4951

I bought a dehydrator years ago. I use it when I have too much fruit. Sliced apples with cinnamon and sugar are delicious! I didn't like the dehydrated strawberries. 4951

Mangos dry pretty nicely, most available fruit, but some pit fruit (peaches, apricots, etc.) turn brown when dried. Doesn't hurt the taste however.Watermelon, kiwi's, strawberries not a fan dried. OK if used in something like yogurt or cereal, and watermelon takes awhile and almost totally disappears. (You have to try stuff ya know).raspberries, blackberries, those little seeded berries, don't dry to well, at least for me.Never tried grapes since raisins are easy to buy, and not real expensive. 4951

@FoFa:
Can you slice the watermelon that thin and still have enough meat to dry? I had no idea you could. Only because it's 90% water. Seeded berries I don't think I'd like due to the seeds.

I would like to make my own jerky. I like a little softer and can only find a good one at Bucky's.
I'm really watching this thread. Thank you all for filling in the blanks I did not know I had.

@beadweaver: That was why I got a dehydrator in the first place.
I did make some ground beef jerky that was pretty good, a little salty, but I like the regular jerky better.You have to use a lean meat as the fat causes it to go bad quickly.But you can make jerky in your oven, if all you want is jerky, you do not need a dehydrator.Check Bing/Google, about 8 hours on super low in an oven does the trick.Oven Beef Jerky 4951

@FoFa:
I never by meat with a lot of fat or if I see to much I'll have the butcher trim and reweigh it. Nothing makes me madder then getting my meat and having to trim it up to find I threw half my money in the trash as fat.
I wonder if I got that roast beef in the my meat thread would work if cut a little thicker. It's like butter now.
I'm more into learning to do and store my fruits and vegetables.
Getting ready to go off grid and roll away in an rv, having dehydrated foods would save on weight and food prep.
I plan on doing a lot of my cooking outside when we stop. Then having a couple weeks of food in the freezer.

@beadweaver: As long as it is lean, and raw. Typically they say about 1/4 inch slices for normal beef jerky.
It's the marinade that is critical once you have the meat.If you like it softer, it doesn't last real long outside the fridge however. Unless you cure it, but I prefer not to do that. Throws the taste off, and additional expense and trouble. 4951
