That always amazes me.  I often wonder how the homeless people here in downtown afford cigarettes, booze, and drugs. 4951

They beg for the Cigarettes as well.  Back when I used to smoke I hated pulling up first in line at a red light, they were more aggressive trying to get a couple cigarettes than they ever were trying to get cash.  Good to see they have priorities. 4951

Cigarettes can be a seriously selfish addiction. My ex-husband would insist on smoking at least a pack of day, even when we were broke. I would get fussed at for spending too much money on groceries, and I mean buying bread for PBJ's and fresh fruits for the kids. I would budget on $30 for the rest of the week, thinking we were fine, but he would spend $4-5 per day on cigarettes when we were at our lowest point. I just can't fathom that mentality. I'm not saying all smokers are that way. My mom was a smoker too. She stopped 7 years before she passed. There is no way in hell she would have let her kids go without so that she could buy a pack of cigarettes. Thanks to my dad, she never had to make that choice. 4951

The begging seems to be increasing. Instead of that one nagging intersection on the way to my office, it seems that every intersection is now manned with someone begging. 4951

@donnatella: It is overwhelming. I just don't make eye contact. If I do, I shake my head.

They get free breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. Minimum two meals. I spent two weeks homeless myself. It was miserable, but I couldn't beg. Most have food stamps and/or Social Security Disability. Those food stamps go 50 cents to the dollar all day across every major, or even moderate city. Do not donate anything to homeless persons. Offer to take them to the Star of Hope or Salvation Army. If they refuse or make excuses at all forget them. 4951

I work in an area that has them on almost every corner, and they double up on Fridays.  There is one very heavy set woman who comes up to the car windows on a mobility scooter.  I used to wonder where she plugged it in every night.  When construction started in the area, I could not see a way for her to get that scooter to the corner without being dropped off by someone in a vehicle. Edit:  I want to point out that I have volunteered at Martha's Kitchen with some family members, and there are truly needy and very grateful people who get fed there, so as much as I try not to judge, I can't shake the feeling that the folks working the street corners are hustlers and are, in a way, steeling from other folks who need help. 4951

Many of those people out there are most likely paid "actors". Someone drops them off and picks them up everyday. They probably get a bonus if they find some scrawny dog to sit out with them all day. I went into work real early one morning and saw a car drop 3 of them off at Wilcrest and I-10. They all started walking to their corners and were still there when I left work that evening. I never give them money. 4951

I have been approached several times Downtown but one particular time, it was a couple and he asked our bus line for money to feed their kids while she was jacking with her crackberry.  If they can pay for a phone they can feed their kids or their priorities are screwed up.  Either way, they got nothing from our bus line.  Seems there are more homeless/beggars Downtown now.  4951

YESSSSS!!!!! You hit it right on the head I never give any money to those who smoke much less anyone else, it shows they can't give up their useless habits to get back on their feet. I learned one time too many, I had left over cupcakes from my work I know its not much but I went and gave it to a woman and she didn't bother to say thank you and took out a pack of cigarettes after she placed the cupcakes on the ground and sparked it up, almost told her to give them back!! 4951

If people would stop giving to these panhandlers, they would disappear.  They "work" their corners because they get enough tax-free money to make it worthwhile.  If they didn't do well, they would not be sitting in the sun all day for nothing. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: I agree, this is why I don't bother to give them anything. 4951

Driving home tonight at the intersection of 1314 and 59 there were a few teens and an adult woman. They were holding home made posters attempting to collect for diabetic amputees. I hate when people approach my car at intersections 4951
