Had a blow out yesterday evening. Couldn't stand up. Hot towels on my back and guts for several hours. Woke this morning with residual pain.
I know I did it to myself. I vacuumed, mopped, moved furniture and stood at the stove. Kept that pace going for 4 days. Last night my dh asked wth, you look like your 5 months pregnant. When my back blows my guts blow up or out. I don't know why. Wrapping my mid section in heat helps. I'm down and not doing much today as I can't breathe from the pain.
Gonna be a nap day. 4951

Hope you feel better soon, it sucks trying to maintain a household (cleaning, cooking, running errands, service calls, kids, kids' activities, etc.), and trying to work for those of us that do. I sometimes get lower back pains if I am standing too long on my tile floors. I have to sit and take a rest. Lately I've been tiring out much quickly than I normally would when cleaning. I never tackle the entire house, I would do upstairs one week (Friday) and the downstairs the next. But here now I am lucky if I get part of the up or down on its scheduled week... 4951

@Annie:
I don't take pharmaceuticals so I'll just have to ride it out. Almost went to the er last night.
I know the vacuum is my enemy. Yet I can't just not vacuum. My dh went and did all my grocery shopping for two weeks so that's better than him running the vacuum.
I did three and a half rooms when I should have stopped at one. I still have the hallway and two more rooms. They can wait. I must call uncle. Just wish dh was home today.

@beadweaver: since you know it's the vacuuming have you tried wearing a good back brace while you vacuum? Those things really help. 4951

That thing would run 24/7. Lol I have a 130lb dog in shed mode. I brush, furminate, and sweep. Also his cookie crumbs. He likes to eat them right in the through way so you must step on it. I go barefoot. Ewwee lol

I get on these rolls where I feel great and then think I can do what I did 30 years ago. This is my wake up call. I normally do one room a day. I don't usually toss three rooms of furniture.
This is part of the reason I want all this heavy solid wood stuff gone.

@beadweaver: Ice would be better,  20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.  Heat do not reduce the inflammation on an acute injury.  Aleve is good too.

It sounds like you have a protruding disc in your lower back. The swiveling action of your legs/hips and upper body while vacuuming is obviously bad, bad, bad for this disc. Try to not swivel or hire someone to vacuum. Your abdomen protrudes because your body is compensating for the low back pain, and resulting severe lack of core body support, by incorrectly using your abdominal muscles. This incorrect use further compounds your disc problem and prolongs your agony. Your best option is to get to an orthopedic doctor to get into some physical therapy to *properly* strengthen your core muscles. Stronger core muscles = less stress on lower back and bad disc. Trying this at home on your own is not a good idea, as you can further injur yourself by using incorrect body mechanics. A physical therapist will work with you to retrain your muscles to work properly, thus avoiding future injuries. 4951

You really should get a roomba. It's life changing! Even if it can't handle it all...you could at least let it clean 1/2 the house for you. I let mine do everything except for the kids rooms, toy room, and the guest room. The more you run it, the more efficient it gets.

I need to be better at running mine more, but my toddler is scared of it. LOL! 4951

My black lab mix loved to be vacuumed. I tried it once and she would come back for more! We never put it directly on her coat but we would run the comb through her coat and the vacuum wand with attachment behind. It certainly helped.

@Maisey1:

We did discuss a back brace. I have taken a big wide piece of leather and make a rude one in desperation. Problem is that if I don't go around like a banshee with a goal to suck up every dust bunny, I'll be okay. We were just saying it's been a while since I had a bad one.
Rest for a day or two and I'll be back to my old self.
I have learned that doing nothing is worse. So I'll putz a bit, do some laundry, make beds etc.
I had intended to garden in the early morning but it can wait. I just don't see me lifting a 50lb bag of dirt or even shoveling it out of the bag.

@sammee:
You are so right. My doc and I just discussed PT.
Everything you said is spot on. That's what I told dh last night when he asked if your back hurts why the belly. I gained 10 lbs ( damn those drumstick ice creams) and I am once again starting to have issues. I feel like I got kidney punched. Something popped last night under my left rib that made me see stars. After that and the fact that my dh nearly wiped out his shoulder doing circles on my spine. I passed out.

Besides the vacuuming I was dancing about while cleaning. Old school Willie, Waylon, Hank jr, David Allen Coe, Marshall Tucker, credence, etc. I heard the hip pop, dh heard it pop and said uh oh. I kept cleaning. It's the left side from the third rib down, the hip is completely locked. My doc has told me to just walk in whenever I feel like it, she'll make time for me. Love her and her staff.
Truth be told she's ordered 3 mri's and I just hate being poked and prodded. They did it daily, weekly for 15 yrs finding nothing. Truth be told I've lost my core strength and yes I should do something to fix it.

PT works great for chronic back pain.  I recommend the aquatics Care place in Humble or Fondren Orthopedics. Maybe try to budget for a maid even just 1 x a month.   4951

I'm sorry you're hurting. There are natural supplements you can take to take the edge off. I like bromelain with turmeric. Some people prefer white willow bark. There are also foods you can eat to help reduce inflammation. The first ones that come to mind are pineapple, cherries and walnuts. Sounds like the makings of a good fruit salad! Google anti-inflammatory foods and you'll find various lists. I believe salmon is a big one too. And I agree about the PT exercises. When done consistently, they really help. I'm just not good with consistency.

Good luck to you. I hope you feel better soon! 4951
