I would like to hear other peoples view on this..So my son, who is six, went on a field trip with his daycare/school last week. They asked me to pack him a sack lunch in a ziploc gallon bag and put his name on it. So I did. I packed him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, capri sun, applesauce and a banana. I get a call from the school around 2pm (after the field trip) and I was told they took his peanut butter and jelly sandwich away. Why? because its a "peanut free" school. Apparently I'm not allowed to send that sandwich anymore because other kids are allergic and if another kid got ahold of it, they could get sick. I buy my own groceries, not them. I don't think it's fair that we can't give our kids something because someone else might eat it and get sick.WTH!!?? I put HIS name on it for a reason. For HIM to eat. Am I in the wrong for not agreeing with this so called "rule"?  4951

Never had lunch food police growing up.  I can understand their concern however it was labeled and packaged for your child.  Did they give him something else to eat in it's place?  If not, I think that is just wrong. 4951

@eandrews87: So, what if he/you were a vegetarian and did not want him to eat turkey? This stuff has gotten out of control.  I don't understand why people expect others to adjust their lives to accommodate them.  If you're allergic to peanuts, don't eat peanuts.  etc. etc. etc.

@hotterthanyou I agree! Luckily he likes turkey and cheese. But I am HIS MOM. I give him what I want him to eat.If you see a name on there and it's not yours then don't eat it! Simple. 4951

That kind of stuff drives me nuts! If my child was allergic to some sort of food I would teach her to stay away from that food, not demand that everyone else change their eating habits to appease her. What happens when that kids goes to work? Will the entire office be forced to become nut free?  4951

If there was a medical issue with another child in the group I would not mind obliging them. But they should have sent home a written letter with the explanation of what they could bring for lunch or not. Surely, your child wasn't the only one with a P&J.  But I also think some of this peanut allergy stuff has gone too far. I have a teacher friend who said she had to spend extra time every day before class started having her kids wash down to remove any peanut residue they had brought from home.  No one in the class was allowed to ever have any peanut products in their lunch (and a lot of products have peanut products in the ingredients) but just in case, they had to keep their lunches outside of the classroom in the hallway.  Also the cafeteria had to be peanut free. Now, don't get me wrong. I am all for protecting our children. But if my child had an allergy that was so sensitive that the smallest crumb was life threatening then I don't believe I would be sending him to school, I would home school. I guess they never go grocery shopping or to restaurants either. 4951

What happens if someone is allergic to bread? Or meat? Or milk? Do we ban everything? 4951

Since we are on a "school rules" thread..His regular school (elementary) tells us that we need to provide snacks for "snack time". Ok, cool. No problem. Then the teacher says to bring enough snacks for 20 kids!I asked why.She said "because some parents forget snacks and then the child doesn't have anything"So now that $2 bag of goldfish turned into the $8 box. Since when do we need to provide snacks for EVERY child?  4951

@WskyTngoFxtrt: Apparently so. I agree, this crap has gotten out of hand. If a child is THAT deathly allergic, he/she should be home schooled. The teachers should do their jobs and make sure the special child doesn't eat peanuts and leave the others alone. At that age, many kids will ONLY eat peanut butter sandwiches.

If everyone is special and everyone else has to tiptoe around them, no one is left to be normal.

When my son was in school, I sent him with PB regardless of what the "school rule" was at the time. I'm. It depriving my son every day because of any other who may or may not get close enough and may or may not get sick.I refused to coddle people like that I and WILL NOT bow down to their bulls#t. 4951
