We have a beach vacation coming up in a couple of weeks and my kids are beside themselves with excitement that only 2 desert rats from Phoenix could possibly feel.My 13 yo son is dying to go fishing. There is a jetty near the beach cabin where we'll be staying. He wants to do some fishing. What kinds of poles, reels, and fishing line, weights, etc. does he need? He's just a beginner.I don't want to buy a lot of new stuff because I don't know how often we'll go fishing or, realistically, how much he'll even  enjoy it.Can someone answer my questions, please, and, do you know if we might be able to rent some of this stuff?Thanks!P.S.  Please don't waste my time telling me how dirty the Gulf water is, we'd be crazy to eat the fish, blah, blah, blah. I'm just not interested in hearing it. My son is dying to try out some ocean fishing and I'm just looking for that information. 4951

It might be cheaper to do a charter since they provide evrrything except the fishing licenses. Prices vary greatly so shop around. 4951

@Annie:  I looked into that and the cheapest charter is at least $500. I don't want to spend that kind of money on a whim of my son's.  :D

Just need a pole a net a styrofoam ice chest. Go to a local store. (Are you going to Galveston or Bolivar). Any get some live bait and that's all you need for youngsters to get started. Under 16 does not need a license.

Of course. You may need a couple other things. Some weights or bobbers. Depends on what you are fishing for. Some pliars come in handy if you get bait caught in fish etc. A knife. Again. Ask the local people at bait shop what's hitting on best and they can direct you to either worm , shrimp , Minnows. 4951

Shakespeare surf rods are excellent for fishing in Galveston and depending on what you are fishing for I would opt for 20 pound test line for good size fishes likes Redfish and drums. If you fish of the jetties any medium size poles will do and the best bait right now is shrimp and if you can find them small crabs and species such as redfish, drums, gaftops, and my favorite sheepshead will bite them. Academy's sell some good lines of rods and if you can find them they will have specials like rod and reel combos. Good luck and let me know what else advice you need. Also $500 is a bit steep for fishing guides and there are some who charge 350 or 400 a trip. Let me know if you want these guides for that price. 4951

@HollyHobby:

I have been before and paid around $40ish for a basic expedition on a non-private charter. Call more or put your son in charge.

Don't forget to apply sunscreen more frequently since the sun will reflect off the water.

Pack a hat that will preferably shade your neck.
My mom always packed one of my dad's long sleeved cotton dress shirts to wear to prevent sunburn on her arms.
Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. 4951
