I am a single mom in kingwood area that recently got laid off. I'm in need of work ASAP to be able to pay rent/utilities for myself and my 2 boys. I have years of office administrative experience as well as bartending experience. Any leads on local businesses that are hiring will be greatly appreciated! 4951

If you got laid off, make sure to apply for unemployment benefits. I know there is a 2-week waiting window, but you'd come across a lag in pay if taking any job other than serving, pretty much. And even with serving, between hiring process, testing and training, you still won't see pay right away.I'm sorry you're in the position you are in! I've been laid off in the  past and it's rough. Emoticon In this area, though, there seems to be quite a few jobs though. Good luck! 4951

There are quite a few out of work right now, so the passive approach wouldn't be the best route and it's best not to trust your career in the hands of others on a community forum.

Most companies list their openings on line. If someone is looking for a job, they really need to be proactive and a bit aggressive in their search.

The following websites are the current hot spots for job listings and have basically replaced the local paper classifieds section.

LinkedIn.com
simplyhired.com
indeed.com
CareerBuilder.com
Monster.com

First, build your LinkedIn profile so you can apply quickly without having to retype your info so much. Most job sites will allow you to apply with your LinkedIn account, so it's very important. 4951

@Leo:
Look on the sites Donnatella suggested, and go into Workforce in Humble. You can fill out the application online, and when you go in, they will sit down with you and help you out. Good luck to you

Don't rely on just the online stuff. I've found that I've missed out on a lot of good candidates for jobs because some moron HR person doing the screening has no idea what they are looking at. I've been told I wasn't qualified for many jobs that my qualifications far exceeded, so I always suggest taking the decision away from the HR turds and make your way to the real decision makers. Sorry to offend any HR personnel on here. 4951

I always call an make sure the right person got a hold of my resume.  Because HR has screwed things up in the past.   4951

Would you consider temp work? I have a friend that works steadily through temporary jobs and she's able to narrow down what she will accept by location. She works pretty much everyday she wants to. 4951

@soxs mom: Early on that's exactly what I did. You never know when a temp job can turn permanent. Plus, most temp agencies also place permanent workers as well. Sign up with several to guarantee you are staying busy, plus you will have multiple agencies working to place you.!

You can always deliver pizzas until you find something better. I made about 2700$/month doing it full time @ Domino's. You get paid tips and gas every day. Kinda like Bartending, but better hours and free pizza for your kids. 4951

@DVaz:
I my husband I did that while going to college. And when I couldn't get a job right away. I made about $1200 a month part time back in the 1990's 4951

I hear commercials on the radio all the time for Uber drivers.  That could be a possibility while you are waiting on something else to come along. 4951

It would just be nice if you could go in person and talk to someone and you just weren't screened from an online app. It sucks. 4951
