I seem to remember someone on a cycling thread here mentioning a road, that spurs off of Hamblen, that has a short, but steep incline to it.  Does this ring any bells with anyone?  I'm looking for something that one could run repeats on for an hour or two on Sunday mornings, without being an interference to traffic.  The parking garage at Kings Harbor will get old really fast.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there are any rural/secondary roads to the north of here (within a 30-40 minute drive) that have some hilliness to them, that would be great info as well.  Thanks for your input. 4951

Yes- take Hamblen road all the way back- you will find the hill. There's a school on the left before the hill- or drive all the way down the hill and park on the side. There is actually a loop that goes thru the neighborhood off to the right. It's a long gradual hill more than short and steep.
You could also go to Eisenhower Park down in Summerwood. There is a 3 mile loop or a mile(?) loop. One hill is shorter and steeper the other is more relaxed with a curve. 4951

@Jpgurl: Are you talking about NE Christian Academy?  Looking at Google Maps, that loop must be on Indian Hill Trail, and continues on Sunrise Trail to Redbud, then back to Hamblen.  Looks like it's just under a mile long loop.  A long, gradual hill is fine; actually good, as that would a little better simulate (with repeats) a long climb on trails.  I'll go check this out for traffic issues.
I live in Kings River, so getting to Eisenhower Park would be fine too, if not easier.  Are the trails there paved or dirt/gravel?  I'd really love some soft trails like East End or Lake Houston Wilderness.  Either way, it looks like another good tree-covered area to run in the summer.  Not sure why I haven't been here yet.  Thanks for responding. 4951

Paved rd at Eisenhower with a dedicated bike lane that us cyclist rarely use( the traffic is very very light there- just the occasional fishermen and the even fewer kayaker. BUT there are soft trails through there too but I don't know anything about them- I see hikers and mountain bikers use them all tthe  time. And yes that is the hill on Hamblen- but you may like Eisenhower better 4951

@Jpgurl: Thanks again.  I need hills wherever I can get them, but as I'm transitioning back to trail ultras, it looks as though the dirt single track at Eisenhower will be a very nice addition to my running venues.  The Hamblen hill will provide a differing variety of training.

If you are up really early my friend and I used to run the hill by Petsmart/Old Navy. Then we would turn right and run over the train tracks. I think if you do it 3 times it is a mile I believe. There is hardly any traffic over there before 8 am. 4951

I can't run (Broken Ankle 20 yrs ago) but a walk hills and stairs around Buffalo Bayou downtown. I takes me 35 minutes to get home (to Forest Cove) after traffic thins out. I work only a few minutes from Downtown. I park in Parking Lot H and walk for about 1.5 hours I try to go 2-3 times a week.JJ  4951
