@Ray:  I think I will upgrade my PC but delay updating my wife's until I have a good feel for working with 10.Edited:  Windows 10 won't be released until the END of July.

@yankeejessica:   Those have just been notices that Windows 10 is coming and you can sign up for a free upgrade.  MS will give free upgrades for a period of time, but will eventually start charging for it.  The upgrade will be downloaded and will be a lot of large files, so they can't download everybody at the same time.  They will start downloading for those that signed up earliest, then get to the later people.  It may take a week or two for you after they start downloading.I am not thrilled about W 10.  I have no use for almost ALL of the new capabilities they added to 10.  To avid computer users, they are continuing to dumb-down the system and users will not be able to control as many things as we have in the past.

what you could do is to clone your existing drive to an external or another hard drive and save that as a backup copy of what you have now. then if you don;t like windows 10, you could wipe the drive and reinstall the cloned drive copy to be back where you were. 4951

@ProblemAgain:  That's an excellent suggestion.  Thanks!  To clone a drive to an external drive, does the external drive need to be completely empty of files?  I've done backups but never cloned a drive.

if the external is large enough you could clone it to a partition. you'll need to clone the whole drive including the d partition which is where the recovery files are located to repair and restore . or you could pick up a 2tb external for around 70 bucks and do a single image. then if you decide you like the 10, you still have a spare storage to do a secondary back up of all your other stuff. remember drives are really cheap these days and cause they are cheap they have a lot more tendency to croak without warning. 4951

@ProblemAgain:  I have a 1TB and a 2TB external hard drive but I use those to backup my wife's and my PCs.  It's worth it to buy another external hard drive just for the clone.  Also, since we won't have the disks as backup for the new operating system, everyone needs to remember to make a systems backup file once W10 is loaded and running.  Or just keep a copy of the files it downloads to install W10.

@Retired_Engineer: just remember the rule of thumb...two backups cause just when you need the backup, the drive dies.....but the hd company can recover the drive for you...all with a wave of a credit card and no estimate of the cost...much cheaper to have two backups

I've been using Windows 10 since the technical preview came out. It's much much better than Windows 8.1 (stability, speed, clean and windowed interface for apps, look and feel)It also will include a new browser called Spartan that is much faster than IE. Here is a tip for those who may have questionable installs of windows... if you download and install the technical preview now it will convert to the release version for FREE.Microsoft is planning on creating a recurring income source from app store and media purchases so they are changing the pricing model for Microsoft 10.    4951
