Eat em, and buy fewer....also  seperate them from the bunch and put a little Saran wrap on the stem. Try it. YOU will notice they stay yellow lots longer  4951

How about avocado, I throw away so many.  I either buy one that turns out to be nasty inside or I wait too long.  So annoying.  4951

@sh56: I put in maybe quarter cup and enough water to cover the berries. And when I eat them I rinse them off first.

@Retired_Engineer:

Store them in the fridge away from any other tryps of citrus or acidic fruits/veggies. 4951

@BooBear:  Thanks!  I'll try that!  For over a year now, we buy slightly green bananas and if we don't eat them within two days, they get the black spots and start turning mushy.  I know that bananas give off ethylene gas as they ripen and ethylene gas causes fruits to ripen faster.  We've tried separating the bananas from each other and that only helped a little.  BTW, if you want another fruit (including tomatoes) to ripen faster, put them in a plastic bag with a banana.  The ethylene gas from the banana will cause them to ripen faster.  I learned about that many years ago when I worked upriver from New Orleans.  We had a slow ethylene gas leak from one of our units.  Everyone's vegetable and fruit plants all around the plant suddenly ripened almost overnight.  Even small green tomatoes turned bright red!  The company bought everybody's ripe fruits and veggies from the neighbors if they were unhappy.

My dad separates bananas, puts them side by side in a gallon ziploc freezer bag, squishes all the air out, and refrigerates them.  He gets several extra days of non-overripeness that way. 4951
