The Houston Police Department is reminding residents of a service that allows concerned citizens to fill out an "alert slip" for an increased police presence. Reasons that one might fill out an alert slip include an observed increase in speeding cars around a neighborhood or school zone, unwanted loitering in business parking lots or residential complexes, a suspicious person or "prowler," an increase in burglaries/thefts, and even going on vacation. When going on a vacation, if you don't have a house sitter or someone to watch over your residence, your house may become a target. Holidays, including the summer time when families tend to go on vacation, usually show an increase of burglaries. This request asks for increased police patrol during a specfic time period--and the slips to expire (and would need to be renewed). The HPD also noted that different patrol stations may have differing procedures in regards to the alert slips. For more information, visit http://www.houstontx.gov/police/contact/The Alert Slip may also be filed online athttp://www.houstontx.gov/police/alert_slip/Read More:http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/kingwood/news/houston-police-encourages-resident-to-take-advantage-of-alert-slips/article_16d25f8b-9f87-5a32-b98d-242f893f5614.html 4951

When I was in my late 20's I rented a small place next door to the firehouse. They were there 24 hours so I got to know them and made sure to bring home baked goodies over.
When I'd go out of town every weekend they were my guards. If someone pulled into the drive to turn around I knew it.

On my block the vacationers tell me they'll be out of town.  I keep an eye on the place. 4951
