"Your essay should not explain whether you agree with ______'s claims..."College Board has found a way to explore controversial topics without argument.  The New SAT essay section is about reading passages and explaining/re-making the author's/subject's argument.  The student is graded on the quality of explaining how the author/subject made the argument. While there's value to understanding someone's point and how they made the point, removing any possibility of debate or disagreement narrows the use of an essay to too small a focus.  Writing isn't always, usually, or even mostly about analyzing or re-stating someone else's opinions.  Writing is about expressing opinions."...should not explain whether you agree with..." pushes the false premise of "unbiased" analysis or reporting.  Even so-called unbiased writing or reporting includes bias.  It is impossible for a human being to write or report without adding some flavor of opinion.  It starts with the selection of subject.SAT, as evidenced in these four practice tests, is selecting political topics and presenting left-leaning analysis.  By presenting only one point of view, the test forces the student to regurgitate only one point of view.  That's biased. The four practice test essays are about re-making Jimmy Carter's argument for not allowing development on land designated as wildlife refuges, re-making MLK's argument that the Vietnam War was unjust, re-making an argument that technology use helps young children develop, and re-making the argument that natural darkness must be preserved by forcing cities to shut off or shield lights at night.Three of the four are clear left leaning positions on topics that have been debated for decades.  The fourth is more nebulous, but it can be a left leaning position depending on what "technology use" means.  An unbiased alternative would have been to present two essays on each topic:  one on each side of the issue.  Students would then choose which one to analyze and describe in their essay.  That wouldn't force students to read and re-make the argument for one side of the issue.By making only one side of an argument available for analysis, and by selecting the left leaning side in three of four (judging by the practice tests) or even four of four essay sections, College Board clearly exposes the left leaning bias in education.SAT is a necessary part of the college entry process for millions of students.  As one of the top SAT tutors in the country, I will teach students how to excel in answering the New SAT essay.  But I will also teach them about the bias the New SAT essay section contains.  Knowledge is power.  Knowing about the bias and understanding it will help students score higher on the essay section. 4951
