My cat that lives at the MIL's got out but didn't really run away, just stayed out front of their porch. They knew he was not going to go anywhere, so they let him chill out there for a little..

He was attacked by a big white dog when he was sitting in the front yard apparently. I had to take him to the vet because he wasn't
able to walk and his face was ripped open.

I ended up having to have him put to sleep.

I don't know what kind of dog it was that tried to eat my cat..

But it makes me very very very sad.
I thought my pets would be safe in my own yard. 4951

@Lululaya,I am so sorry to hear that.  What subdivision do you live in?  I know that someone on my block in Trailwood has a white dog that is fairly large that is always getting out.  He seems pretty friendly though.  Since you said you don't know what kind of dog would do that, I assume you have no leads on its owner? 4951

That is AWFUL! The owners need to be held responsible. I hope you find out who they are. RIP sweet kittyEmoticon 4951

Please, KDC, don't start a war with what I am about to say.

I was told it was a white pitbull.

I am in no way, shape, or form bashing the breed as a whole. I love, adore and respect all animals no matter what breed or type.

However, if I see this dog near their house again, I will call animal control or follow it home and kick the owner in the crotch, because quite frankly, I loved my cat a little more than their mean dog.

@topcat:

I cannot get over the feeling I had when all it took was my signature on that paper to sign his life away..

Animals rely on us to take care of them, train them, and love them...

And I will be looking for another rescue cat, eventually.

My cat that was killed was a second-generation rescue kitty. He was 13.

Since it was a pit bull now everybody will be sympathetic to the dog. Responsible owner or not, if found, whatever breed, that dog needs to be put down. 4951

@LuluLayla: You are right, kick the owner, not the dog!  And in all fairness, some people tell me my pure bred Vizsla looks like a pit.  There are hundreds of breeds out there, if you don't know them all, and none of us do, than it is easy to generalize.

@notfromhere: That's not fair to say the dog needs to be put down.  Not taking a side, but the cat could have provoked the dog.  Perfect example, my young Vizlsa (who some say looks like a pit, but he is a pure bred dog) is an idiot.  He goes up to cats all the time.  Usually without incident, but one day he slipped out the door when I was bringing out the trash.  He wandered two houses down (I was one house away talking with my neighbor and could see him).  He walked onto their porch to visit with their cat.  The (older) cat was not impressed.  She must have lashed out at him because we heard a loud yelp and he came running back to me, hair up on end and his tail between his legs.  I think she missed and just scared him because there was no blood/marks.  But he hasn't learned his lesson, he wants to be friends with everything and has approached this same cat again, just not as close!  There is a chance that if the cat had scratched him he would have gotten scared/hurt and lashed back out at her.  We don't know.  If this dog in question has a "history" that might be a different story, but until we find the owner, we don't know.  However, the owner does need to be aware, as well as others in the neighborhood.

Neither animal should have been outside unleashed and unsupervised. They are ANIMALS. And totally rely on their humans to keep them safe.

Sorry about your loss. 4951

Not to be insensitive, but neither deserves to be put down. These are animals in nature, behaving like animals, so to speak, even though "nature" here is a neighborhood. It is the owner that has the job of protecting their own animals, whether in doors, in a fenced yard, with a leash, etc.

We can't solve animal problems by killing them. As said before, they depend on us to take care of them (food, water, healthcare, chipping, security, love, attention, and protection). It is up to owner to prevent attacks and protect their animals from attacks.

No animal, whether dog or cat, should be out to attack others or left to fend for themselves. 4951

@lola: I agree with Lola. BOth of you are at fault. That being said, I have left both my stupid cats outside for the last 18 or so years. Unfortunately they come back every night. I think they wont die just to **** me off. I have a black and a white stray that hang out over here, (yes I have been feeding them. I know this admittance will cost me some MAN POINTS) and you are welcome to come take both of them. They are around a year old. Green eyes.

Again, I don't live at my MILs, (THANK THE LORD!) ..so I was not there when this happened. I just got a phone call that my cat was attacked and the details they provided me and I flew over there to my cat. Do I necessarily "blame" anyone? I'm not exactly sure..I understand that they believed their front porch at 12:00 in the afternoon is okay for a cat to sit for a half an hour, and I also understand that dogs like to chase cats.

As far as both animals not deserving to be put to sleep, the cat had his face ripped off and broken bones. The vet advised me that it was the best option, and I agreed. The dog that got to the cat does not deserve to be put to sleep for being a turd either...

@LuluLayla: This whole thing sucks. I am sorry you had to go thru this. I hope you find the dogs owner. I think he is to be half responsible for the vet bill.

@LuluLayla: I didn't mean it like that. I know putting the cat down was necessary due to injuries. It's sad but sometimes the more humane thing to do. I meant we can't solve animal issues by putting them down. Aggression is their nature at times but does t make them "deserve" death. Proper care and training can curb those aggressive traits.
