Where does one go or who can one call to get a house window fixed? Had a branch fall overnight and it busted out the upper section of one of my MIL's bedroom windows. It's one of those older style single pane windows. Can I just replace the glass myself? Where would I get a piece of glass that size? Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks in advance!! 4951

Measure it, most places like homedepot can cut you a piece. If not get a glass cutter and buy a piece of glass and cut your own. Clean the broken piece out slip in the new piece and seal it in. I have fixed a many of them. Started as young as 12 when I broke one and dad said you broke it, you fix it.....lol. you can call someone but its a pretty simple job. Google the steps if needed but calling someone should be last resort because they will charge you 100s to fix a 2 dollar pane and 20 minute job. 4951

Be sure to measure accurately when you let them to to cut it the right size. if you have a piece large enough to piece together length and width provided its not to broken up you could bring that along.I personally go to Binswanger since their stock glass is usually thicker which I prefer. Big box stores tend to carry the 3mm and Binswanger will go up to 10 mm and below. BInswanger will also cost you a bit more but its peanuts. 4951

Home Depot doesn't cut glass anymore, at least at the one in Porter anyway.   Last time I used 494 glass.  left side of 494 just past the empty field behind Kroger.  It was $35.00 for a 25 X 30 piece.  I took the window frame with me but like @burnsway said it is not hard to do.

As a glass artist I will say you only get one cut.
If you are off a smidgen it's scrap.
What I mean is I was taught no oil cuts as I fuse in a kiln and you only slide a glass cutter scoring it once. Then snap it.
You must use a square too. Make sure your score goes all the way to the end or you'll brake a corner off rendering your piece useless.

Depending on the size the glass, it can get expensive.
Good luck. Sorry that happened. 4951

Call your insurance, sometimes a lot of the cost to have it replaced is covered.Don't forget to add cost of temp fixes (tape, plastic, etc.Just depends what your deductible is for something like that. 4951

@FoFa:

Just remember when you make a home claim even if you don't use it, it hoes on as a homeowner claim. When you go to get new insurance they ask have you ever made a claim. You must tell them yes as it's in the national database.
While here during Rita I had a pipe break in the kitchen flooding my den. I only called for info. It was a mess on the insurance side.
The glass and service is much cheaper out of pocket and no dings.

Thanks all, for the assistance today. I went to Ace first; no good. I needed 40" x 30" and the guy said they can only go up to 36" x 36" max. Said every time they've tried to order larger sizes, they've always ended up arriving broken. But he did direct me to Kingwood Glass off of Ford Rd. though. Drove over there and got what I needed; $29 and some change for the glass and weather stripping. Nice people. Made it back to my MIL's house, made a dry run, no bueno; needed to trim about 1/8" off both the length and width. I measured at least three times! Anyway, I took it back and had them shave off an eighth. When I was there earlier, the guy told me they could trim that small a section off; sure enough, they did just that without a problem. Back to the MIL's I went. Got it all installed and it looks like nothing ever happened. Props to Kingwood Glass and all you KDCers that pitched in!

Glad to have helped. So glad you didn't cut it yourself. If it's not something you do regularly then without proper tools, things can get messy.

Happy to here it's all installed looking new.
Now you earned some brownies.
