Anyone been recently? I haven't been since I was a kid but my parents want to take the entire family towards the end of the month. What is there to do there these days? Recommendations? Thanks! 4951

We haven't been in several years.  We took the kids there several times when they were young.  There are a lot of shows to see and animal exhibits.  One word of caution, I assume you are talking about the one in San Antonio, there is not a lot of shade there and it can get really hot.  The first time we went, we tried to follow the scheduled shows.  Soon after one show finishes, another starts at another site.  The don't give you much time in between so we had to rush between shows.  Within the first two hours, my wife had a mild case of heat stroke.  We had to sit her down in a cool spot and get fluids in her.  We finished the day, but took it much slower the rest of the day.The next couple of times we went, we went on our own schedule and caught only the shows that we really wanted to see.  We took plenty of rest stops and sat in whatever shade we could find.  We also made sure the keep hydrated.  On the last trip, both of our kids brought a buddy.  They were old enough to branch out on their own.  We used walkie-talkies (before they had cell phones) to coordinate where we were and where to meet.  That worked out great! 4951

After viewing the HBO Documentary, BlackFish, I'm not a fan of Sea World......  However, I do recommend visiting the Natural Museum Of Science, The Houston Space Center, The San Jacinto Monument, The Battleship Of Texas, and / or The Holocaust Museum...

@FallonAre you serious, dude?  ....I'll search the inner-webs here in a few and see if I can find some info....  Thanks for the heads up, home-slice...  You would think (and hope) that Media Outlets, such as HBO, would do some serious fact checkin' before airing such a damning, heart wrenching Documentary....  Guess not....  .And I guess the term "Documentary" now = "Docu-whatever-agenda-I-want-to-push"                      Dishonesty, truth twistin', and straight out lies happily allowed!  ....Damn shame....P.S.- I really like that John Stossel, dude...  4951

@Heathur, when we go, we stay at the Hill Country Hyatt.  We get there right when the park opens, and ride the rides we really want to go on. Then we leave and go back to the hotel for the hottest part of the day.  SeaWorld's water park has zero shade.  And it is brutal during the day.  We usually head back to the park late in the afternoon.  By 4 or 5 the water park gets a little less busy, and the sun isn't so brutal. We do the shows later in the day too.  Stay hydrated, and make sure to wear some hats.  The park is great, just not a lot of shade anywhere.

@Fallon:

Is the water park included in admission? If not does the admission part have places you can get wet?

In one day- park & waterpark? Or just park? 4951

@herron1345: I have been obsessed and studied orcas my whole life.  SeaWorld has been doing some major spinning/damage control/desperate advertising to try to make people think that the stuff covered in Blackfish is a lie.  It is not.  They have permanently affected the Pacific Northwest Resident population (now considered endangered) when they stole numerous baby orca from their mothers off the waters in Washington state.  In the process, the ended up killing a number of orcas, and tried covering it up by slitting their bellies, and putting rocks in them, and tying anchors to their tails to sink them.  They took so many babies, that it has permanently disrupted their population growth/gene pool, etc.  I can go on and on and on, but there has been so many horrible things that SeaWorld has done.  I would suggest that everyone watch the film, and make their own decisions, and also read some of the books that are our there that will back up the claims made in Blackfish.  "A Death at SeaWorld" is a good one that really goes into it, and I am also currently reading "Beneath the Surface" by John Hargrove, who was previously a trainer at SeaWorld for many many years, and ended up quitting due to realizing the whole orca in captivity is so wrong.Of course SeaWorld is going on a damage control rampage.  Their stock has taken a nose-dive, and their attendance has plummeted since Blackfish was released and people have been made aware of the ugliness behind the scenes.  It is a desperate time for them.I'm not going to bash anyone that chooses to go to SeaWorld, (especially since our options are so limited out here) but I do encourage people who truly love these animals to be as educated as possible when giving your hard earned money to this corporation.

The one downfall is you used to be able to feed the dolphins for like $3 but now it's part of an "experience" which means it's expensive! 4951
