an NOAA weather radio?  Do you think that is important to have?  Trying to make sure we are prepared for the future.  4951

@MarT:

I had one when we lived in florida, but kept it unplugged most of the time. We would get all kinds of alerts that were non issues for our area and it would drive me crazy. About the only time i would plug it is was when we had prime weather fo tornados. 4951

@MarT: I have one, but then you know...well, it's me.  Tech being what it is now with cells, laptops, tablets, etc., there are plenty of ways to get more specifically tailored watch/warning notifications.  Unless you really desire to hear the robo-voice on there, you can probably slide by without it.  NOAA wx radio is also available online.  I've had mine for a while though, and it also runs on batteries, so in case of power, wi-fi, or cellular outage, it's still useful.  It's fairly cheap insurance for ensuring you can get the information.
Edit to add:  NOAA/NWS are still the experts, and who we should ultimately be relying on, despite how wrong people think they may be.  Many websites and other services pull data from NWS assets/resources.  While maybe not aligned with many folks' expectations, having quick and reliable access to the information they put out can, at some point, be crucial. 4951

I guess I more thinking battery operated, in case of power outage. We wouldn't have internet or tv without power and t-mobile sucks for me in SC, so I figure I wouldn't have that either. Seems like the power goes out here super easy. I've had more hours of power outage here in the past year than I had in Colo for 14 years. 4951

There's an app for everything, including NOAA. I don't think an actual radio is necessary. 4951

I personally employ a far more sophisticated method of weather warnings. I have my handy dandy Coonass Rock Predictor in my back yardOver the last 30 years it has proven to be 100 percent effective. Hard to beat that kind of accuracy. 4951

Before we got our generator, we bought Eton hand-crank units for us and our two kids.  It runs off of two AAA rechargeable batteries and has a hand-crank to recharge the batteries OR small solar cells can recharge the batteries.  It has a radio, flashlight, and USB port so you can charge your cell phone.  4951

@Retired_Engineer, where did you get that?  That is pretty cool to have.

@Fallon:  Amazon.com of course!  Search for Eton radio FRX3.  It's also handy if you go camping.
