I was looking at Honda CRV's yesterday and noticed they all have a dealer add on feature of Nitrogen in the tires for $100.  What is the purpose of that? What about tire maintance, wiil that cost me more for filling with pure Nitrogen instead of air?Do all tire places do this? 4951

Nitrogen in tires is supposed to keep your tires inflated and be less sensitive to temperature changes where normal air might be able to escape and you would need to inflate more often.i think...
Me personally? Would not spend the money on nitrogen as I use "regular" air and rarely have to refill it. 4951

It is the dealer screwing you out of a few bucks.  Tell them they are welcome to put it in but you aren't paying for it....same with all the dealer add-ons. 4951

You can buy a cylinder for that.. Waste of money @foxymama tell them to take it off. I figure you're talking about the Honda dealer here in KW. 4951

Nitrogen at 100% does not expand or contract with temp differences, BUT in our mild climate very very cold days are rare, so low air pressure would be rare, the air in your tires is approx. 80% nitrogen anyway, same as the air we breath, I would not pay for this option, ask to see there system they have at their site that removes the O2 from the air, I think it is a scam. 4951

@foxymama:  While there is some benefit to inflate tires with nitrogen instead of air,  at $100, it's a ripoff.  It cost them a couple of bucks so the markup is ridiculous.

I have nitrogen in my rogue tires. I got a nail, had discount fix it. Took it to Robbins Nissan and they filled it free.
It keeps your tires more balanced.

@foxymama if you don't want all the extras look at the mid or base model.
I waited till I was older to buy brand new. 50 to be exact. I had many sales jobs and travel and never wanted to pay that to beat a car. Now it's art and music miles so I loaded it.
Dh went mid level. They knew they were dealing with people that keep cars for 12 or more years.
Dh's will go and replaced with an rv this time.

Don't accept anything you don't want.

Best of luck in your choice. We are thrilled with ours even after three years. They look and feel brand new. 4951

@foxymama: I have (or had) nitrogen in the tires of my Chevy Spark. It came that way. Not many places nearby that re-fill them. I honestly did not notice any difference I still check the tires are re-fill with air just like the tires on my truck that are not nitrogen. $100 is a rip off. The Chevy dealer told me most of the new cars are coming in with nitrogen. Not sure if that is true or not but they did not charge for it. 4951

I would tell them to remove them, because you don't need them. I am willing to bet that they will just throw them in for no charge. 4951

I helped a friend buy an Accord at the KW Sterling McCall.  We did the research (low, medium and high prices paid) knew what the trade in value should be and where she wanted the payments to be.  They tried to add on all kinds of things and played the "I will let you sit here" game.  We walked out.  They called two days later and sold the car for exactly what we wanted.  I also did that with my truck at Anderson in Cleveland.  In and out with new truck in less than two hours. 4951

Having nitrogen filled tires is a benefit for corrosion protection by reducing oxidation and maintains air loss as nitrogen molecules are larger that oxygen molecules and do not permeate the tire resulting in a loss of air. There is a reason why every commercial and military aircraft along with nascar and most first responder organizations use nitrogen. Yes most new cars these days are being equipped with nitrogen from the factory or dealer up sale. Most new car dealers (at least around HKA) will maintain your nitrogen needs for the life of you owning the vehicle free of charge. 4951

First off, you will NOT notice a single difference in the performance of your vehicle. For a hunnerd bux you can buy your own nitrogen cylinder and have a lifetime of fills on several vehicles. (Conroe welding supply)...I run nitrogen in my tires ONLY because I have a 200 cu ft cylinder with my welding equipment in my shop. All the snake oil claims aside, here are the facts..AdvantagesBetter MPG.Nitrogen filled tires bleed pressure slower than compressed air. Properly maintained tire pressure is essential for tire wear and gas mileage. A low tire does not always look under-inflatedLonger tire life.A properly inflated tire wears slower. If a nitrogen filled tire does not lose pressure as quickly you can expect longer tire life.Oxidation is blocked.Oxygen causes oxidation. Oxidation can make rubber brittle, increasing the chance of a blow-out. Nitrogen in the tire blocks the oxidation of the internal rubberNitrogen is a green alternative.Nitrogen has the potential of being greener for the world. As nitrogen-filled tires maintain proper pressure, achieving better gas mileage, reduced emissions and longer tire life, the demand for tires could decrease. This means fewer manufactured tires, decreasing the use for natural resources. Also, manufacturers would decrease shipments of tires, which of course helps the environmentDisadvantagesMaintenance is more important. If routine tire maintenance is performed, you can expect the same advantages with a compressed-air tire. The reality is that gas mileage and tire wear are spared when a tire is properly inflated. If a nitrogen filled tire is not properly inflated, you'll get the same loss of gas mileage and tire wear. The claim that the tire could reduce the demand for tires depends solely on the vehicle owner, not the tires. If a driver does not perform routine tire maintenance, with or without the nitrogen, the tires will not wear evenlyNitrogen is expensive. There is a suitable reason why the FAA requires nitrogen in commercial airplanes, and the United States military uses nitrogen. Weight is a factor and the weight of these commercial sized vehicles benefit from nitrogen. The claim that a passenger vehicle needs the added expense might not be as founded. Nitrogen-filled tires usually cost about $5 or more per tire 4951
