Health inspectors were tipped off about possible health code violations at the Denny's located at 22671 Eastex Freeway, not far from Kingwood Drive. Upon examination of the establishment, inspectors found a coat of "black slime" inside the ice machine. Additionally, over 54 pounds of chicken, ham, cheese, sausage and turkey was found to be off-temperature, and deemed not safe for human consumption.Read More:http://www.click2houston.com/news/money/tipster-alerts-health-inspectors-to-spoiled-chicken-at-grocery-store/33532422 4951

Slime in the ice machine is so common, restaurants should be cleaning those ice machines regularly. That seems to be commonly neglected. 4951

First of all, it's Denny's, did you really expect it to be the pillar of cleanliness?  Secondly, "slime" in the ice machine is VERY common.  For those of you who eat at Subway, I HIGHLY suggest not using their ice, "slime" is a constant problem for them, as well as McDonalds.  I used to work for CUNO (now owned by 3M) who manufactures water filters.  I serviced the national accounts for Starbucks, McDonalds, Subway, and a few smaller local chains throughout the country.  I was always getting frantic calls from franchise owners about "slime" in their ice machines or soda machines.  It's particularly gross when you see it in the hoses for the soda.  In the ice, it won't usually come out into the ice itself, but in the soda hoses you can get little chunks, nasty, and that is not good for you.  "Black slime" in an ice machine is very very common, for a number of reasons, but mostly heat and bread (yeast).  If you ever go somewhere and their ice seems "chippy" or has holes in it, they likely have a slimy ice machine.  Don't freak out, it won't kill you if it's in the ice, be a little wary if it is in the soda though.  It is just a fault in how ice machines/refrigerators work.  To make things cold, ice machines and fridges use heat.  When places have "fresh bread" that gets baked or heated on site the yeast travels in the air and clings to the warm ice machines and breads.  It can be handled by cleaning but is difficult, mostly dealt with by having a water filtration system (expensive cartridges) so a lot of places don't replace like they are supposed to (about 1/month commercially, or once per 3 months residential.  They are a pain to replace so a lot of places just don't do it.  Most health inspectors that I have met won't shut down a place for this unless there is a laundry list of other violations.  4951

@allymansfield:  No.  That's just one of the only places open 24/7.  It's fun to get a text, jump up and meet your friends in the middle of the night for coffee and breakfast, for no other reason than just because.  Or, maybe it's just my kooky group of KDC friends that likes to do that, who knows.  If you can wake up and not have good answer for "WHY NOT?", and are off the next morning, might as well, right?  Life can't be all about doing the sensible thing and focusing on "have to's" all the time.
