We are going from 2500sq ft to 1000-1300sq ft.  What are some tips you have for downsizing? 4951

@FoFa: I know!  We always talked about how easy it would be and now that we have decided to "pull the trigger," have no idea where to begin or what to do.

So I downsized a few years ago. It's pretty liberating. I picked my favorite pieces of furniture to keep, sold everything else. I went through each closest and got rid of everything that didn't have sentimental value or that I didn't use in recent months. It took me awhile to go through the process. Some items were really hard to determine if I should keep them. I set those side and reassessed when I was mostly done with everything else. I went from a 3-2-2 house that I lived in for 17 years, to a 1 bedroom apartment. 4951

I would say get rid of as much clutter as you can.  I got that done for me when I got divorced and I found it strangely liberating, since then I have been very careful about not acquiring too much stuff that sits around.  Helps with the space. 4951

@RogueHippEE:

We did and are downsizing.
I started in 2010. Got rid of the 2400 sq ft anchor. The biggest and most expensive. We moved to a 1200 sq ft apartment. However in three short years it went from $1175 to $1675. Be very careful and read that fine print.

We dumped cable at $300 and internet at $65 for a hotspot at $30.

The one thing you have to do is decide what you cherish and what you can live without.

This is what I am doing and I hope this helps.

Take a bin mark it keep
Another for sell and one Donate
Get a trash bag too.

I started in my bathroom and wow the products were piled into the trash.

Our major issue is that we no longer want the big stuff. The pub table and two stools, tv stand, bedroom set, big cherry desk and side table and guest chair.

Our goal is to rv it from spring to fall doing a short three month winter rental.
We are heading into retirement. My goal is no anchors. For what our monthly bills are we can live quite comfortable and have a great view in an rv.
It's all this stuff. I've purged and purged and we still have stuff. 20 years of stuff. And to think I used to travel with a set of saddlebags and helmet.
I've been looking for a small warehouse to sell out of as I want no one at my house.

Our friends just dumped the big house, paid cash for a smaller one and all are so much happier. Including the kids.

Good luck.

@RogueHippEE:
I am the resident expert on downsizing! I move d here in 99, and this is the fifth, yes, FIFTH home I've lived in. I went from 2300 square ft at the largest, to my cozy 1535 square ft pad I have now.
* First, start small- knick knacks go bye bye. Anything that isn't really sentimental goes to a huge *** yard sale or charity.
*Next, small appliances, curling irons, shoes you don't wear, those rollerblades you just know you will want to wear one day, clothes that don't fit, all go away too. Less space= less storage and less storage = more clutter.
*Keep one set of things, get rid of multiples.For example, you have two chip and dip trays? Keep your favorite one. Five sheet sets for your bed? Keep 2 or three.
* This is the most important one: Get smaller furniture with clean lines. With a bigger house, I had a huge entertainment center, coffee tables and a dining set. All dark solid wood, ornate and beautiful, but far too "heavy" for a smaller home. Lighter colors, clean lines, and smaller size accent pieces will give your home a roomy feel.

These are things I learned on my own, and have worked for me. Hope my tips help!

@RogueHippEE, you have to have the mind set to do this before you even start.  Do not keep the thought in the back of your mind that you can always rent a storage unit.  I have never understood people doing that.  Why pay 100's a month to store stuff you never use.We went from a 3 acre lot with a 3500 sq ft house to our postage stamp yard, and 3K sq ft house here.  I had to get rid of rooms of furniture.  And books!  I has a massive hall library, here no.  I got rid of 23 boxes of books.  I let the neighbors come over and get what they wanted and then I donated the rest to the Kingwood Library.   And yard equipment.  We had 2 lawnmowers, one was a riding.  And 2 trailers.  Think about it like this, what is really important to you?  If a hurricane was coming what would you honestly grab to put in a plastic bin to keep safe?  I did this during Ike.  I had to get the important papers, baby books, and on old family bible.   And my hard drive.  We downloaded all of our photos onto our computer, so I got rid of 3 huge bins of photos.  What I kept now fits into one small bin.  We downloaded all of our music, so I donated our cd's to the military, serving overseas.  And I got rid of a ton of DVD's like that too.  We really just download our movies now when we travel, and the kids watch them on their tablets.You have to get in, and stay in, the get rid of it all mind setEmoticon  Best thing I have ever done.  I no longer take on any project that I know I can't finish in the next couple of weeks.  And what you can't sell, you can donate to Family Time on 494.  They are so grateful for anything they get.  Best of all you are letting your stuff help someone out instead of sitting in a closet.

@Fallon:

Yes all donated goes to Hamm and Black Cat Ridge. I am down to five bookcases. All were donated as we figured if we wanted to read it again we can rent it.
We too have been downloading and uploading to go paperless. Much easier too is a flashdrive. I labeled insurance, personal, medical. We've talked about putting a spare in our safe deposit box too.

How do you donate your movies and cds to our troops? I love that idea.

@Fallon: You downsized from 3500 to 3000 sq feet?  That's quite a sacrifice.  </end sarcasm>  Still, that's 1000 sq ft bigger than the biggest house I've ever had.
