Okay, came home to 21 year old DD sick with high fever, sore throat and coughing a lot. After 2 visits with the Dr. they still are not sure whether it's strep or a virus. She tested negative for strep. They currently have her on Ceftin, which is a pretty strong antibiotic, but it's not helping.

This morning her fever is back up again after stacking the Motrin and Tylenol, she has a horrible headache from all the coughing. I am trying to keep everything sanitized since we all have to be back at work on Monday, but not knowing what is causing this is very stressful. Whether your baby is 2 or 21, it stinks to see them sick.

She works with kids and she said that last week there were 4 kids out with different things from strep to just a cold.

Has anyone seen or heard of any viruses going around displaying sore throat, headache, fever and cough? 4951

With the high fever. it is more than likely a virus. The fact that the antibiotic didn't help supports this.BTW: Hope she gets better soon. 4951

Did they give her something for the cough?  Even if it's viral, she should still be able to get something for that. 4951

When I was prego I got a horrific virus. After 2 crying trips to the dr they finally gave me a throat gargle. It's just a think syrup with lidocaine. It was a life saver!! It's called lidocaine viscous. I'd call and see if they'd call some in for her. 4951

@RogueHippEE: Sounds like she needs heavy duty cough meds.

A virus can be wicked, and has to run it's course. I made a "virus bomb" that consists of an Emergen-C packet, Zinc tabs, L-Lysine, garlic, and coconut oil capsules. All those things have anti-viral properties. Tea with honey and cinnamon too. Fluids and sleep, sleep, sleep should help as well. Sorry, I couldn't remember the name of the OP, but I'm sure she'll check back here for our expert advice, lol.

I am going to try to use peppermint oil for her headache, I just read somewhere where that is supposed to help. We shall see. I know when DH had the flu last year, we did eucalyptus oil in steaming water and it helped a lot. 4951

Few months back my kid got something similar..doc said although rare at her age its going around even in adults. Its big term is coxsackie, known more to parents hand foot mouth.

Very high almost uncontrollable fever with throat blisters for about 4 days. Then congestion for about 3.

Not treatable with antibiotics but we got some to prevent secondary infections. 4951

See if they can call in some robitusin with codein. It might knock her out enough to sleep through the rest of the virus or what ever it is. 4951
