I am no stranger to the chronic headache, that's for sure, but I need advice! I am making an appt today with my neurologist for tension headaches and migraines I've had almost daily for about 3 months. I've tried Verapimil and Topemax daily to keep them away with either bad side effects or no results. What are meds that have worked for you or someone you know to keep the headaches away? I can't function anymore, and am at my wit's end. HELP! 4951

I have heard of using health-grade peppermint oil & rubbing it on the temples of your head....   My friend was having migraines & this worked for her.  So sorry you're dealing with this. Emoticon   4951

@topcat: Naratripton helps me at the onset of a migraine.  It is an older drug so it's cheaper.

My hubby has gone through this a couple of times in the past 10 years. They put him on blood pressure meds both times even though he doesn't have high blood pressure. He calls them his birth control pills. Both times the headaches got more infrequent then stopped. They did an MRI both times as well.

They also gave him Imitrex, which he took for a couple of weeks with the headaches but didn't help much. 4951

@alecktra:
Thanks. I thought about oils this morning, so I tried lavender but it didn't work. I have eucalyptus at the house so I'm going to try that next. When I feel good enough to go out, I'm going to get some peppermint. I've been dealing with these since I was ten. A few years ago, I had a bout that lasted the better part of a year. I've tried everything but acupuncture, so that's next. I was up most of the night with excruciating pain. Took ibuprofen and drank coffee, and still feel like there is a screwdriver in my right templeEmoticon

@topcat: OMG So sorry.  I hope you find a cure.   Have you ever checked out earthclinic.com?  I always go there to find an initial remedy to various things...

@MarT:
Verapimil is the bp med they tried on me. I took it for about 6 months. I don't remember if it worked immediately or not. For pain I've tried Midrin, Fiorecet, and others, but nothing works. Imitrex made my headaches worse. My body is difficult I guess. Had MRIs and an MRA (checking blood flow) before too. Glad your hubby is feeling good now (I'm assuming).

Fiorcet works for a lot of people I have heard.  You have been under a lot of stress lately.  Do you think the stress makes it worse or do you think it is unrelated?  I would address this with the doc as well if you think they are related. 4951

I am NOT saying you have the same issue, but my DD went through about 2 years of hell, drugs, being pulled out of school, etc. Then we finally found the problem was mechanical, not chemical with her.She had to have surgery, that was about 4 years ago. She has been perfectly fine and pain free since then.It just took about 2 years for them to figure that out. And drugs they put on for "migraines" had some really, really bad side effects.Just keep that in mind if it goes on to long, but don't jump to conclusions, the majority of those type of head aches are chemical imbalances. 4951

Benicar.  It's a blood pressure med, but for some reason, it keeps migraines at bay.  I'm not migraine-free or anything, but they're under control, for the most part.  It's the closest I've been to "normal" my entire adult life.  I've been on it about 5 years.Imitrex is okay for when the headaches come, anyway, but it makes me mostly non-functional.  I liked Relpax better - I can't even remember why we switched me to Imitrex, actually.  4951

My dd had horrible migraines and takes a non FDA approved drug called Sebelium.  You just have to find a dr willing to prescribe it.  It costs $80.00 every 6 months.I do PT for my tensions headaches but know people who swear by Zanaflex.I also have found that Propanol works great.  I take it for tremors but it has helped tremendously with my migraines. 4951
