You can see what they are assessed at on HCAD. 4951

Probably the best way to get to market value is to see what similar houses are selling for on HAR. 4951

HCAD and hit the tab "nearby addresses" it tells you what the people on your block are assessed for, look at square footage & land squre footage. 4951

@foxymama: I don't know when your house was built but Ownership History only goes back to 1988. I work with HCAD every day.

I just found the house with the lowest appraisel per sq/ft and asked for that.  Is that what most of you ask for? 4951

@foxymama: Did you read the home page on HCAD and what they need. I've never done it but if you have time & know a realtor or call a realtor & ask for the recent selling prices in the area, on your block or in your village. A person can list a house for any thing they like, but how much did it sell for.

I filed mine last minute for MCAD too. I just chose a number that was about $6000 above the appraised value 2 years ago. There is no reason for a significant increase. My location isn't better than it was. My house has not had any improvements. Houses around me haven't improved. In fact, the house next to mine has been in foreclosure for over a year and is not maintained at all. Last year they said our values were going up because of the grand parkway and the amusement park. Neither were completed in the last year. The construction is still a hassle and the amusement park may never be built at this rate. 4951

@Mahm: You went off the "appraised" value or the "market" value?  I'm looking at the online protest form and it asks for your opinion of the "market value", not the appraisal value?

@djchavez0921:
Yes it asks for market value. I calculated what the best appraisal value was and added just a little for Market value.
In the notes section I listed the house that had the lowest appraisal and asked for that amount per sq ft.
I have never done this before so I have no idea if it will work. 4951
