Anyone on here that works for the district?  When does Humble ISD generally do most of the hiring for the new school year?  I know there are currently numerous vacancies, but was wondering how the process works.  Do the anticipated open positions all get filled by in-district transfers first, and then once the dust settles with all of that, do they then look to continue filling positions with new teachers?  Also, do they continue with the hiring process throughout the summer, or do they try to have most of the positions filled before school is out for the summer? My husband has been substitute teaching in Humble ISD over the past year and has decided that he really enjoys teaching elementary school (grades 3-5) the best.  He decided on a career change after spending 18 years in corporate America and completed the Region 4 Alternative Certification program, and also passed the content exam for both EC-6 and 4-8 (ELA).  He missed the boat last year, and was really hoping to find a permanent position this go-around, now that he has some experience.Any advice or input is greatly appreciated.Thank you! 4951

They have a job board with active openings. Good luck to him! https://www.searchsoft.net/ats/app_login?COMPANY_ID=00003724 4951

Thanks!  Yeah, we check the Humble ISD job board everyday, I was just wondering if anyone knew, generally speaking if they continually hire throughout the summer, or if they try to get all of their ducks in a row before the school year is out.  I know there are numerous districts in the area, but he really has enjoyed his experience with HISD over the last year and would like to find a permanent position.  We will be visiting family for 2 weeks after the school year wraps up, and I hope that doesn't mean that he will miss out on prime interview slots.  He has subbed everything from K-5th this year, including SPED and PE, and he feels that he is best suited for 3rd-5th grade, but he also really enjoyed working with the SPED classes. 4951

I don't know about Humble ISD, but with finals and SAT approaching I am slammed with tutoring.  Saturday I tutor from 10AM to Noon before running off to work the Astros game. 4951

It seems generally you need to "know" someone to get your foot in the door. 4951

@angelpie: Yeah, that's pretty much how the world works, which can be unfortunate for somebody who is going to be a fantastic teacher and role model, just needs to find that school that will give him that chance.  Everyone has to start somewhere.

@Littlegoo: I think the alternate certificate could be part of the issue.  I know Humble ISD used to prefer hiring those who have their 4 year degree in education and not the alternate certificate.  Maybe things have changed.

That would be quite unfortunate.  He has a 4 year degree in English/Creative writing from a great University on the East Coast, 18 years of experience with a Fortune 500 company, where he did onboarding/presentations/public speaking, among many other things, and a lot of life experience.  For people who realize later in life, that teaching children is what they really want to do, it's not really feasible to do anything other than an A.C.P. when you have a family and responsibilities.  He really did learn a lot, and gained valuable experience by substitute teaching over this past year, and I hope that counts for something.   It seems like early 20-somethings, fresh out of college are able to get some of these jobs, and sure, they may have a 4 year degree in education, but lack the same amount of life experience and possibly lack the level of maturity and responsibility that somebody who may be a bit older has.  I just hope he isn't overlooked due to the ACP. 4951

@thegoodwife: Thanks!I think he is going to try New Caney as well.  Initially he was going to try to stay close to home since we have a son in elementary school in Humble ISD, and a daughter who will be starting Kinder in 2016,  but New Caney is just up the road and looks like a nice, smaller district.  He was initially going to sub with New Caney ISD last year, but was so busy with Humble ISD, that he never ended up doing any subbing there, but he has dealt with their HR dept. last year and said they were all really nice.  We did see that there are some 3rd-5th grade positions open, and he will be applying this week.

Thanks Stealth, that's encouraging to hear.  He has really enjoyed the subbing gig, and the kids have really taken to him.  He's kind of treated like a celebrity by the local kids, we can't go anywhere anymore without him running into kids he has subbed for !  A few weeks ago some kids came by the house asking him to sub for their teacher! 4951

Good luck to him! It takes a special kind of person to be a teacher, and it sounds like he is just that kind of a person... 4951
