Can anyone suggest plants that repel mosquitos.  I heard lemon grass works real good but I cannot find any.  I heard some flowering plants and even some herb plants help also.  4951

Citronella is the most common - member of the geranium family.  I have seen it at Lowes.Also marigolds and ageratum.  Lavender, too.  Herbs that repel are basil, peppermint and rosemary.(My basil plant is drowning right now.....)  Oh yeah and lemon balm.   4951

I just saw a scented geranium plant at Lowe's. They have citrusy smelling leaves and repel mosquitos. They are pretty and have a nicer scent, in my opinion, than citronella. 4951

Citronella and marigolds

@lcoupert:

All,
I am pleasantly surprised by the success of my Citronella plants. I actually pull a leaf when in the yard and rub it on my arms.

Mosquitos run the other way.

I bought four plants and with all the rain, they are about three feet tall already. Placed at each end of the patio has reduced the mosquito population to just a few and they aren't biting near like they did before.

I'm sold on the Citronella and the Marigolds. I plant marigolds as border plants around my roses. Still some Mosquitos but not near as many.

I have always great luck with Skeeter Skreen.

@Fallon:
Tell me more about this stuff, please!
And yes, I was bitten by a huge mosquito today, and it hurt!

@Attila This year I used Raid Max Defense, it's the one that acts as a barrier. The mosquitoes on my front door and on my patio were so bad, I couldn't open a door without at least a dozen getting inside, and then I would wake up covered in welts. My husband and I never smoked indoors, we would go out on the patio, but the bugs got so bad, we started smoking inside.  I sprayed my front door and entire patio with the Raid, and haven't seen a mosquito since, it works for several other insects as well, including roaches. 4951

@buddyboy: Dang! That really sucks. I was thinking about putting some of those plants in pots around the patio, but I'm not going to bother if it's not going to help. I did just hear the mosquito truck go by! We don't seem to have an abnormally large amount of mosquitos around the yard, but the ones we have had are the bigger, dark colored ones with the lighter stripes on the legs. They hurt, and they leave giant welts. The only time I ever had bumps like that from a mosquito was after fishing in the marsh. I've seen quite a few bat lately at sunset, so maybe they're helping the situation a bit!

@attila: hate to say it but the truck wont do much either. They are abundant this year. Not much will help except covering yourself in deet while outside...or not being out during feeding time. But thats even iffy at this point. Lots of standing water around right now so they are worse than normal unfortunately
