59 was closed following the great flood of '94. I don't know if the water was completely over the freeway, or just so high on the bridges that there was concern of the bridge failing, or that the freeway in low spots was covered (not necessarily the bridge). If I remember correctly, this was also well before they completed the reconstruction of 59 into what it is today. Help me out fellow old guys. I was living in Humble at the time, so south of the river so it didn't matter to me as much then. 4951
I just remembered and found the thread where @Brat posted a bunch of pics from that flood:https://www.kingwood.com/message_board/view_message.php?message_board_parent_id=1070819&message_board_message_id=1071185 4951
I have some pictures from '94, too, taken from the Hamblen overpass. The water was definitely over 59 - and not just a few inches, either. It was crazy. That was before the construction on 59 was finished - but I don't think that part of 59 is significantly higher than it was then. I might be wrong, though. 4951
I cross the river every morning going to work on the feeder bridge and with all this flooding I am so afraid of it becoming unstable and something terrible happening. So I go over it really fast , catch me if you can 4951
