My brother lives in Houston in an apt and has had Dish television for several years. When installed, it was put onto a pole cemented in the ground.

In the last week, he has been told by the apt complex that he is to get insurance for it for in case of accidental damage to the property.

Does anyone have knowledge of this or if Dish offers a supplimental coverage? The person with whom he spoke at Dish seemed dumbfounded by his question.

Since it is not "inside" his apartment, would renter's insurance handle this?

@Annie: I used to manage a company that installed Dishes.  We had to have in writing that the apartment complex approved the installation. Maybe have him call his insurance company and see?

@Annie: Did he ask before he installed the dish?

@RogueHippEE:

Yes. It was approved when installed - probably two years ago and to the specifications to the apt desires. On pole, not attached to apt. He is wondering why they are saying something now. 4951

@Annie: Could be many reasons: change of management, maybe a neighbor said something, change in policy. To me, if it is on his balcony, it would be considered part of his property and renter's insurance should cover it.

@RogueHippEE:

It is on a pole buried / cemented in the ground. It touches no structure. 4951

@Annie: That land has to belong to someone and I can almost guarantee you that the apartment is going to say it isn't theirs or that he is responsible for it.

@RogueHippEE:

Exactly and if someone is hurt he needs to be responsible. [quote-end-tag-mismatch]

@Stealth83:

So, back to my original question.

Does Dish offer anything for this or is Renter's insurance the way to go? Renter's insurance I question since it is outside of his dwelling.
.
I never had renter's insurance or Dish so I have no experience.. 4951

Even if he goes cable he needs to get insurance.

@Annie: I am with @Fallon on this one-if he keeps the Dish, he needs to ask the apartment manager exactly what he needs to do.ETA: If I remember correctly, Dish does not off any kind of coverage that he would be looking for-of course, I worked with them years ago so things may have changed.
