While pulling weeds tonight, I noticed a webbing on my oak tree. Numerous patches.

Is it harmful or helpful?

@Annie:  that is caused by webworms, the larval stage of a moth.  They are a type of caterpillar that creates a web-like nest to protect the group (many of them).  Yes, they are harmful to trees.  They will eventually cover branches and then eat all of the leaves within their web.  You'll need to either spray them yourself or get an exterminator to spray them.Back in LA, I had a couple of small oaks that I planted.  If I got lucky, I would catch them as they hatched and could spray the huge mass of them before they ascended the trees. 4951

When I was a kid in Illinois they would light the webs on fire to kill them. 4951

Yeah, this guy uses a propane torch.  At least he has a water hose ready just in case!

But if you wait until late October, you won't have to decorate much for Halloween. 4951

Chemical-free way to kill web worms: Poke a hole in the web bag and wasps will fly in and eat the larvae. The wasps love those web worms and will take care of them in a day or two.  4951

You can get this spray you put on the water hose. I stood on my roof and sprayed the entire tree. Triazapan works the best. If you do not take care of it woodpeckers will destroy and kill your tree. No to mention these bugs will too 4951

Ok so experts please tell me. I have what I thought was barklice (from googling) and lots of woodpecker holes around the tree. Do I need to call someone or all harmless? 4951

It is only on the trunk and large branches. It isn't on the leaves like some of the examples of bad infestation.

@Annie: If it were really harmful webworms, you'd probably be seeing the worms themselves. They're hard to miss. I had the light webbing on my trees in KW too...and were told it was beneficial. If you're really concerned, hire an arborist to come out and give you some advice. It might be worth their fee.

@Annie: No, unfortunately. But another idea is to take a closeup picture (or branch with the web attached) to Kingwood Garden Center. Maybe they can help diagnose.
