Ok, so I have been letting my two year old walk around the house without a diaper or panties. She just uses her little potty when she needs to. She doesn't tell me when she goes so I have to be observant especially, after she poops. This week I started taking her to public places and friends houses wearing a dress and panties and taking her to use the public bathrooms and she refuses too. She just holds it till we get home.

How do I get her to the next level of potty training? 4951

Maybe offer her stickers when she goes in public.  So many stickers get her a small prize?  Like a rewards system?  You can get cheap trinkets at the dollar section in Target, Michaels, etc.  Maybe 10 stickers is a prize, every time she goes in the potty outside the home she gets one sticker.  Put it on a big chart at home so she can track it.  I think that is what my sister did with her two boys. 4951

I don't understand what you want if she is capable of not going till she gets home? What would the next step be?

Mine were so annoying in that they wanted to go into every bathroom we passed. It was miserable till they outgrew that.

So are you wanting her to use the big potty? 4951

@BooBear: Perhaps the next step is openly talking about it in detail in public. 4951

@BooBear:
Yes, I don't want her to be afraid to go in someone else's potty. She will need to use the potty at school come September. I have some time but just looking for advice or if anyone else had this issue. 4951

I'd say plan a day where you don't have to be anywhere specific and take her out of the house all day.  Give her lots to drink.  Take her into a bathroom after the point at which it's pretty obvious to you that she should need to go.  Sit her down and make her stay until she goes. 4951

The positive reward system is the only thing that seemed to work with my son. Pre-school bathrooms are scaled down to be pint-sized, plus, a teacher or assistant will go with her and help.

I don't blame her for not wanting to go in public restrooms...they are big, dirty and smelly. Maybe try the kid's wing at church, the library or some place that might be less intimidating for her at first. Then reward her for good results, and positively-motivate any oopsies and make them teaching moments.

Maybe make a fun/funny bathroom song, go to the library and read the "my first potty" books again. Keep it light and fun. 4951

She may just be afraid she will fall in. They make a little seat that fits on a big potty to make it kid sized. I believe they even have them that will fold up so you can take it with you. Tell her she has to tell you when she goes. And try to get her on the big potty at home.

I hated cleaning the little chairs. Was so glad when that stopped. 4951

My kid refused to use the little pottys until I bought one that looked like a real toilet.  At first I had to sit next to him, with him on his little potty, and do my business so he'd get the idea.  It worked. 4951

@Burnsway:

I read somewhere recently that if you keep a pad of post-it's in your purse, you can stick one over the sensor on the public toilets that operates the auto-flush and it will disable it. Don't know for sure if it works, but I would have tried it when my daughter was small. The loud sound was intimidating. 4951

Especially when they'd wait til you got the the opposite side of Costco or Hone Depot to tell you they had to go. And that it was an emergency! 😝 4951

I applaud her, I never use the public facilities unless it's a code red emergency. I'm no sissy either, 20 year retired Marine Corps / Guard Vet. When I use to work in the office, I would drive home then come back to work. That place was disgusting as it should have been, they would eat garbage for lunch and garbage for all meals in general.  4951

If you left it up to her to decide when she wants to go, then she'll never go in public. Emoticon Bring a book, toys, songs, stories, whatever will keep her interested and engaged. Keep her on the toilet until something comes out, and reward her randomly (not every time or she'll expect it). Good luck.. Definitely still something we are perfecting with my 4 year old. 4951
