Are you frugal about some things? I like to splurge on things like anyone else, but I will absolutely go watch a video on how to change brakes on a BMW to save $900. I also make my own laundry detergent. Do I have to? No. I could totally afford it but I like seeing all the funds I save. It's rewarding to me knowing that BMW did not get $900 from me. I did it myself for $50. I do this with a lot of things and believe me, it adds up to thousands of dollars. My wife thought I was crazy at first but I think I have changed her mind. She now has more money to buy nice clothes and shoes she wants. Last year she was out there helping me change the spark plugs in her car. I'm almost certain any woman would help change spark plugs if it meant they could spend $900 on clothes. 4951

I'm to the point I see frugal people as wasteful. 4951

I used to be much more frugal, hubby was an enlisted guy and we have four kids. Now, not as much, but we don't have designer taste. I look for good buys and sales for decent quality.

We renovated our kitchen ourselves, did everything except the granite ourselves, including electrical and plumbing. We saved a bunch, but had to because we probably won't ever recoup the cost. It was for me because I hated the old kitchen. 4951

@fcabanski: Ok...not sure how you got to that conclusion. I do think some people are crazy with it but I'm nowhere near that level. Even BMW will tell you their prices for maint are outrageous. Look, Laundry detergent is approx 22 cents a load. I can make it for .02 cents a load. It adds up over a few years. I do this with a lot of things. It all ads up to quite a bit over time.

Am I frugal?? I guess so?! But I kinda have to be. My wife loses her s#@t if I don't use Randall/Kroger points for gas, or I forget to use the coupon code at the RedBox. Seriously, I'd probably get in less trouble for sleeping with her sister!!  Emoticon  4951

@BBQguy: I get so mad when the gas points and codes do not get used!! I just copy and paste the redbox codes.

@beastmode: I make my own detergent, use coupons whenever humanly possible and would rather Redbox something than pay to see it in a theater. I also make my own dish detergent, and carpet freshener.

@cgm10sne1: I do the same thing with craft beer. I use to hate beer but craft beer is the devil. I make sure though it never comes out of my full time job paycheck. I do other things on the side to pay form my vice. I also exercise moderately so no getting fat from it either. I always remember what Jay Leno said in that he never spent a dime of his Tonight Show money. He made it all doing stand up bits at events for corporations. I found that really amazing.

I always turn over dish soap, laundry soap, shampoo etc. Used to drive my husband crazy until he saw how much I got out. Then I add water for hand wash.
Those bottle are super clean when I get done.
Zip bags depends on what was in it.
The clear box salad make for holding art supplies and even picnic lunches and hike snacks.
Paper towel tubes hold veggie bags in the drawer with the foil. When I'm prepping I line a bowl and and all the dinner scrapes get tied up. Unfortunately I have no place to compost.
tubes are also covered in contact paper and used to hold extension cords. I write the length on the tube and they lay in the drawer.
Coupons for me are hard to come by. I only buy organic veggies, grass fed meats, dairy and fish.
I have my few vices but never buy store bought cookies, cakes, pies. I make those.
While cooking I always make extra to freeze on lazy nights.
Tonight I am making lasagna roll ups. I make them this way because it give me 18 roll ups. Usually one or two with salad and bread is a meal. We will eat 4 tonight. I'll freeze 7 meals. I'll even have enough sauce to freeze two or three quarts for chicken parm etc.
I made banana bread yesterday during the icky rain. I chose to make 3 mini loaves. Dh is already snoopin in the freezer. He can grab one out the door for work and have s coffee break for two days.

Sorry for the long post. I am the most frugal person. Just not a hoarder. That freaks me out. Things have to have a useful purpose and in use.

We were pretty frugal when the kids were in college, but not nearly as much now.Now, my father was King of the Frugal.  He never threw away any plastic containers with lids (like  margarine) or glass bottles with screwable caps, he rinsed and reused ziplock bags, and even rinse/dried and reused paper towels.  When I was growing up, he would see something in the ditch that someone had thrown away.  He would stop to check it out.  If he perceived it had ANY value, we put it in the truck.  He would go to the dump and root around to see what he could bring home.  Was he that poor?  No, he grew up during the depression in a family of 12 kids.  His father committed suicide when dad was 11, leaving his wife to raise all those kids.  He used to talk about how she could make a simple soup with green onions.  Beans were their staple. etc.  He could afford pretty much anything he wanted.  He was just very tight with his money.He's been gone for two years now. 4951

@beadweaver: I had a few craft beers. Started seeing bedwetter instead of beadweaver. Nothing wrong with either but that's what happens when consuming adult beverages.

@beastmode:

Omg you had me look. I sometimes type with fat fingers. Add some of the captain's special stock and oh how a sentence can change.
Older but not a bedwetter yet.

I do know a b out wakin up and seeing where the money goes. I'm teaching my husband. We used to have a home with a double staircase, the ceiling was 20 feet. He did not want to paint it and while the guys were painting outside he asked, $500 big ones.
two hours later my husband stood back and said that was killer. I said you just bought a new guitar. He looked at me and said, I did, didn't I? Yep.

I rarely even go out to eat. Subpar sysco food for way to much of my hard earned cash. If we do go anywhere and service sucks. I don't go back.

@Retired_Engineer:

Sorry for your loss. The depression taught many lessons that are being forgotten.
My mom was one of 14, maybe that's where I get it. As an artist everything is a tool or has purpose. I try my best to limit anything plastic. Glass jars I use for leftovers or anything you need to stick in the fridge. I can see it so less waste.
I can remember spending the cool morning collecting pop bottles for 5, 10 cents. We made quite a bit of pocket change.
I'll still pick up change if I see it. Somebody in my old complex used to throw away their change. Hubby told me leave it. It became a game. At the end of the month I had $30. I pick it up and he doesn't say squat.
