The White House announced Monday that Washington would no longer provide some military-style gear while putting stricter controls on other weapons and equipment distributed to law enforcement.LINK1LINK2LINK3 4951

I'm 100% for the demilitarizing of the police force but disappointed to see that select fire rifles don't appear to be on the list. 4951

Actually, it is a bad idea as most Police Forces in major cities need the ability to control riots given what we have witnessed the past few months and with Isis now in the US.  I have complete faith in the entegrity of our Police Forces to use any weapons they choose to control and protect.  We have an element of lawless "entitled" society in this country who have no regard for human life, property or laws.  I trust our Police around this country more than I would put ANY faith in what Obama wants for America ! 4951

I'm happy to see this happening.  Police don't need military weapons or equipment.  While I can see a need for an armored vehicle to safely move police in or out of a situation, there is no need for them to have an MRAP or other expensive-to-operate and maintain heavy equipment. 4951

I tend to agree. With ISIS at our door we don't know what we may be facing in our police force. I do know the way things are going they need every tactic available to them should an ISIS situation occur because believe me they will be prepared. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: make up your mind. An MRAP is an armored vehicle.

@chilladahun:  Yes, it is an armored vehicle, but it is specially designed to withstand blasts from mines or IEDs.  MRAP stands for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected.  Each cost $539-600K.  A bit of overkill for police use.edited:  While I agree that police should have access to AR15s, it doesn't mean that I think they should have M2 .50 caliber machine guns.... but by your logic, they're both guns.

@Retired_EngineerI, too, agree with you, R.E.....  No Police Force needs any type of Military style vehicles, Tanks, Vehicles with Weapon Mounts, or Armed Aircraft, except if it's armed with a camera....  I mean, who the hell's shooting RPG's at Police these days?  I musta missed that, I guess....     And why do they need APC's (Armored Personnel Carriers?)  The last time I checked this was The United States Of America, NOT Baghdad...  4951

@herron1345:  An armored vehicle could be very useful in hostage situations.  They can protect the police and bring them in to drop them off close and/or they can be used to safely remove hostages that escape or are released.  They don't need an MRAP or any specialized armored vehicles.  Just something to protect from pistol and rifle fire.  And bottle and rock throwing mobs.  Instead of military weapons mounted on them, lights, cameras, water cannons, and maybe tear-gas/smoke dispensers are acceptable.  Police do sometimes have to deal with mobs, but water cannons and teargas are the typical response used to break up mobs.

Thugs attack, assault and kill police.  Police stop the thugs, sometimes killing them.  Other thugs riot.  Obama responds by limiting equipment to police.  That makes sense.NOT 4951

So we will take the military weapons and such we "should" give to the police, and instead give it all to the Organizing for America (OFA) people. We can them have them post around some of those tea party terrorist meetings if they like guns so much. 4951
