Well during our spring checkup we are told by a local air conditioning company that the evaporator coil has a leak and we are very low on freon, even though the cold air is still working. The cost of replacing the coil & recharging for freon is $3000. Does this seem extremely high? Looking for another opinion as well...recommendations for a company that does 2nd opinions?? 4951

The cost of replacing the coil

@bearae:  Elite Comfort Air (Charles Elliot) told me that replacing mine would be about $1500.00.  They seem to be reasonably priced and will come out at night and on weekends at not extra charge.

I don't recall who originally did it because their work had to be redone. I wouldn't recommend them. Call madd air or kingwood air solutions 4951

Call the other two suggested first for a second opinion...you have too many companies that just wanna sell a new unit when not needed or way over price simple fixes. The 2 companies suggested here have proven over and over to our community that they dont fit into the rip off category. 4951

$3K seems about right if it's a refurbish job but not for general maintenance.  I have been using Kingwood AIr Repair. They do quality work.  They also saved me some coin by showing me a part I needed that was easy to replace. I bought it on line for $12 and replaced it myself. A good test, look and see if they leave crap and junk around the the unit. If they are too lazy to pick up trash that to me says they will cut corners wherever they can and will overcharge.         4951

Very high.  You can't need more then a few pounds of Freon.  If you have the license to buy it, it is only like $50 for I think 30lbs.  You might need 10lbs, at most, if your air is still cool.  The coil is probably about $100-500.  Labor should not be more than $50/hour and even that is high.  Replacement should take a few hours, 4 at most, recharging takes a few minutes.  Granted these guys have to make a profit, but that is quite ridiculous.  I guess it is because most people don't know how to do it and don't have access to buy the parts or the Freon.  And as the hotter months approach they can really nail you since you really can't live in Houston without AC and be expect to act like a civilized human being!  lol.  Sorry you are going through that, but there is no reason it should be so high.  My hubby bought an entire new unit last year for our friends house and helped him install it and put new gas in, the unit itself cost him less than $1500....so for just a new coil, that is quite the markup! 4951

@bearaeThe only thing I can attest to as far the A/C goes, is we paid $5K for a nearly complete HVAC replacement 2 years ago. That was upgrading the outside unit to a 4-ton, everything in the attic, and the thermostat...Even a new furnace. The only thing that wasn't replaced was all the duct work. They just replaced it where our two return vents are, and a few parts of it in the attic. Good luck...I hope yours is easier/cheaper than what they quoted.  4951

Anyone ever have problems with the air handler not turning off once the desired temperature is reached and the thermo kicks off? I'm starting to have this problem, never happened before... 4951
