So a friend of mine is 28 & wants to put her nose stud back in but her hubby says she's too old. It's a dainty little diamond stud, nothing huge, but she really likes it but is wondering if he's right. I say NO! LOTS of adults who have visible piercings & tattoos are functioning members of society!! So what's your take? Opinions? 4951

I don't really like it even on younger people, so I agree with him. 4951

I am neutral on this. In one sense I agree people have the right to express themselves but in another it can be looked on as negative by others. 4951

I'm not a huge fan of out of the norm piercings and tats, but it's not a deal breaker as far as a friendship, or personal relationship, and, of course, no judgment. I adore and drool over Dave Navarro, after all...explain that.

I do think there does come an age where it just no longer works, just like super short skirts, etc.

Then again, there's nothing like a super hot guy no matter what age, with big muscular arms and a little tasteful ink.

Sorry, it seems I haven't been much help here...LOL. 4951

I think they are detrimental when looking for jobs. Maybe it's not a fair way to assess someone but it is a reality. Not all employers have a problem with piercings and tattoos but a significant percentage do. The way I see it, why limit your choices? Unless you're looking for a job at a tattoo parlor not having visible piercings or tattoos won't hurt your chances but having them could be a deal breaker.

I'm 27 & I have gauges (holes in my ears) that I've had since I was 14. Have five other piercings but those are really the only ones that stand out. (None on my face.) I've got 7 tattoos, with the visible ones being one on each of my feet- totally covered, small one on one of my wrists, & a very small one behind one of my ears. With that being said, I'm in the accounting department for our company, in a position where I deal with other people, I'm a soccer mom, PTA mom, church goer, etc. I only wear certain gauges in my ears at work that look like large diamond studs, but that's it. I'm always sure to maintain a professional appearance & demeanor regardless. Believe it or not, there are a lot of us tatted & pierced grown ups who contribute positively to society!! Emoticon 4951

No one is denying that pierced and tatted people can't be good people but you asked for opinions. Opinions are personal. 4951

I agree with the hubby.  I am 32 and have three tattoos (one on my inner foot, one on my back, and one on my hip) and used to have the "second" earing piercing above the traditional one, I still have the top cartilage piercing with a small diamond in it, it is barely noticeable.  I have since gotten rid of the extra set of ear piercings, just didn't line up with my age and professional setting.  As far as the tattoos, two of the three are never seen in a professional setting.  The third I cover with a bandaid if I go on job interviews.  I agree that showing tattoos is not professional and as far as nose rings, I have always thought them to be kind of gross (sorry, JMO).  In my opinion, if you are a mom or a working professional I don't think it's appropriate.  Just like certain clothing choices (super short shorts/skirts, boobies all over the place, super tight shirts, excessive makeup, etc), at some point you need to act/dress/behave your age.  I know that rubs some people the wrong way, but you have to remember that you are always being judged, especially women, and as much as it sucks, it is a reality.  If you don't want to have a negative stigma, you need to dress the part.  We have a guy on our block who is covered in tattoos, never wears a shirt, pants around his butt all the time, cig in his mouth 24/7, drinks beer mid day on a week day, fight with his girl in the driveway for the whole block to hear, and has several kids from several different women, his chickie is built like a 14 year old and dresses like one, super tiny shorts, bikini tops, etc.  As a parent, I would never let my kids go to their house to play because neither look like or act like a responsible adult.  I could be completely wrong and I hope I am for their kids sake, but perception is everything! 4951

I've accepted the reality that judging people by tattoos and piercings is not the best predictor of quality of labor. As to whether it's a good predictor of quality of decision making is another matter.

I've never made a hiring decision based on this, nor have I with promotional opportunitues. But I have disagreed with a former boss who did not promote someone based on visible tats. She insisted it showed poor judgement in that employee. I disagreed. I was wrong. That employee is being investigated by the FBI after being mentioned by name in a wiretap. 4951

Agreed. @Heathur, no one is harping on you here. We just answered an open question to the forum. Tats, gauges and piercings work in some professional settings and not in others. Just like someone dressed like a granny librarian might not be found working in a night club or at Zone D, and Dave Navarro might be out of place in the pulpit of a Southern Baptist church. People adjust their appearance for the environment they plan to be in.

It really is difficult to do things out of the typical norm, that are typical attention getters and free-expression, then get upset when people comment or give looks. You sort of had to know, going in, that it was likely to happen with certain people.

We are your friends here and like you either way. But we are also honestly answering a question posed to us. 4951
