My daughter is almost old enough to get her drivers license and her dad and I will be teaching her to drive. Where can we go so she can get some actual practice behind the wheel without endangering herself or the public? 4951

Sunday morning at the Deerbrook mall parking lot.  Nobody there and plenty of room to maneuver. 4951

@ET: Same thing with K-Park and KHS after hours.  Big empty patches of pavement with nothing to hit but light poles.

Throw in the Park and Ride lot and you can practice lots of turns without running over parking bricks 4951

@shodan66:  Excellent.  We went to the closest elementary school.   It has a fairly big parking lot so the kids can get a feel for steering, accelerating, turning, and stopping.  As they got better, I would have them practice parking within the lines and parking alongside a curb.

For practice parking I had 4 4 foot high 4 by 4's strategically placed upright in a parking space. Park it right and they stay standing. If not, they fall..........no damage to the car. 4951

It never occurred to me to take them somewhere without people..I just threw mine into traffic but they have been driving well before they got their license. At 5 they were in a lawnmower, we had to put a brick in the seat because they weren't heavy enough to keep the blades going and around 8 driving a tractor. Oldest learned to drive a standard around 10-11. Then we moved here. Also dirt bikes and atvs as soon as their wrists were strong enough, around 4. 4951

@BooBear:   Yeah, country people tend to learn much younger.  If not on tractors, then old trucks.  A good friend had a beat-up old pickup in a pasture.  I actually learned a lot about driving in that thing.  I could make excellent donuts and I learned how to induce and then control a slide.

@Retired_Engineer: I started on a Ford 8n long before I was heavy enough to push the clutch down.  My granddad would point it down the row and all I had to do was hold it steady.  I eventually moved up to a Ford 3000...it was fancy with power steering...and then on to his truck to deliver fertilizer around the fields.  I had my own car at 13 and two winters of driving under my belt before I got my driver's license.  Country kid from mid-Michigan.

Go to a theme park and let her drive karts all day so you know what you're dealing with.    If she's hitting cones and tires she ain't ready.  4951
