I like to think the best about people until I'm proven wrong. In the case of Ted Poe, I'd like to think he's generally honest and a bit above the feces pit that is Washington D.C. Unfortunately, he is one of 10 congressmen/women who took an all-expense paid trip under some very shady circumstances. Now, I wasn't a bit surprised to see Sheila Jackson Lee's name on the list -- there's no trough so filthy that she won't feed from it. Ted Poe? I'm disappointed.I'm 100% certain he'll have a perfectly mundane excuse, blah-blah-blah-regrettable-blah-blah-blah, but I expect him to be above something like this. Was there ever a point at which he thought, "Hmmm...something about this doesn't pass the sniff test..."? How about this? Just don't go on the damn trip if there's anything questionable!! Sheesh. And, I believe things like this might even be a set-up for his opponents to pop out an an opportune time as a trap. (Conspiracy theory? Maybe, but things like this happen so often you just have to wonder.)http://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/10-members-of-congress-took-trip-secretly-funded-by-foreign-government/2015/05/13/76b55332-f720-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html?hpid=z1 4951

I grew up in Louisiana and thought only LA politicians were crooked and shady.  As I matured, I started to feel it was a broader issue.  Once I moved to Texas, I was surprised to find our politicians were just as bad as LA, but it was more obvious in LA because many of them liked to brag about their exploits (eg Edwin Edwards).I think some new members of congress go into office as honest people, but in order to get anything done, they have to play the DC game and the game changes them.  In addition, some crave the power and let it go to their heads.  Without anyone holding them accountable (for anything except blatant transgressions), they quickly forget that rules apply to them.  Politics have shifted from "what's best for the people" to "what's best for ME and my large donors/sponsors". 4951

I would love to see Elizabeth Warren run and take the Dem nomination from Hillary.  Based on the cuurent "stable" of Rep runners, I would have to vote for Elizabeth. 4951

@Ann2800...I would vote for her as well...however, she has definitely indicated she will not...too bad, because she is a smart lady who seems to know the meaning of  integrity 4951

@Retired_Engineer: a couple other things to consider...  some of the people who run for office are the biggest ******* shysters and that's why they are attracted to politics and power. like some shysters are attracted to real estate or brokerage etc. remember i said 'some'....   it has always been this way even tho it is cleaner now than it was in 'the good old days'. before the passage of the 17th amendment, senators were elected by their state legislators who were controlled by political machines and/or the guy with the big wallet in their state. those political machines were often either run by or subservient to the 'powers that be' in the individual states. what that means is that the senators were under the thumb of the very wealthy and the corporate robber barons of the day. while we still have way more of that than is healthy (think 'citizens united'), our elected representatives to both the house and senate are way less direct employees of outside interests and less crooked than they used to be. that doesn't necessarily mean they all are more ethical or 'moral' out of choice but rather they are smart enough to know there are records and webcams and cellphones everywhere out in the world. and of course we still elect dumbshits who essentially get caught with the frozen fish in their shorts

@ProblemAgain:  True.  My comments were about the FEW Congressional politicians that start out honest.  The majority are sleaze bags and power hungry before they go to DC. 4951

Those two words "honest" and "Congress" (or any "politician") don't belong in the same sentence... It's a contradiction in terms. They didn't get to where they are by being honest!!!  I must admit I would've expected better from Ted Poe... 4951

I think, the members of congress you never hear about, maybe the more honest of the bunch (notice I said MORE honest, not just honest) as they usually get overlooked by the press because they are typically boring and not as news worthy.

Welcome to the Conservative side.  If you trust government for everything, you will end up disappointed.  Government is not good.  It is a necessary evil that must be kept as small as possible. 4951

funny how everyone thinks all politicians are crooked...except for 'their' politician.....some of the WORST offenders are the cretins bleating about morals, family values and religion similar to the car dealer telling you how honest he is. 4951
