What are some standard garage sale prices? I'm having a garage sale, which will be my first. How should I price each item?Example: Jeans = $(How Much), T-shirts = ?, Shoes = ?, Dress Shirts = ?, etc.I want to be fair and also make a profit. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. 4951

I would first determine what the lowest price you would take for each item, then price a little higher than that.  People will almost always try to haggle.It also depends on the condition and brand of an item.Walmart, Target, and Old Navy items should NOT be priced the same as more upscale items. 4951

I see garage sales as an opportunity to primarily get rid of stuff. You can make a decent penny, but I find that a lot of people want to overprice their used goods.... So if your primary purpose is to clear out some stuff, price it like you do want to get rid of it. I price baby onesies at like $.50 a piece, adult tops at $1 a piece, and jeans no more than $4 a piece depending on the condition & brand. Shoes - no more than $3 in my opinion, except for boots & good name brands. I price with the mindset that I don't want much leftover when 1:00 comes. It's been a while since I've done a garage sale though... That's just my 2 cents, (no pun intended). Like the other poster said... It doesn't hurt to price things a tad over desired amount for haggling purposes...

Good luck! Emoticon 4951

I throw all the clothes in a box and mark it 50c a piece. I tend to do well on ebay with my higher priced clothing. 4951

@yankeejessica:

I agree that you do better on classifieds & EBay, because there's a buyer out there perhaps on the hunt for your particular piece... Plus, there's no rush to get it out quickly. 4951

Good luck, I have no stomach for garage sales. I either donate or gift on Craigslist. 4951

@thegoodwife: Ours do..But we have 3 girls, and there's always plenty of items in great condition still. The youngest's always sell the best(especially when she was a baby/toddler). The wifey also sells her business attire and does very well. I'm like @yankeejessica ...Just get it out of here. Emoticon But the wifey sees everything from a savings point of view. She won't mark stuff down too low very often, because she knows what tax deduction value it has. If they don't sell for what she's asking, they're off to the Goodwill donation truck.

It really boils down to what is the lowest you are willing to take for it?  People always gripe that stuff in the classified are listed as too much, and some of it is, but in the end something is only worth two things: 1. what someone is willing to sell it for and 2. what someone is willing to pay for it.  A piece of furniture may have sentimental value to me and in my mind be worth $1000 but to some "outsider" only worth $200.  If we can't agree on a "fair price" it doesn't sell.  But I would come up with a floor price and then price it a little up from there so that when people haggle, you are more likely to get your "bottom" price for it.  You will never get the original value back, but if you want to get rid of it quick and make a few bucks (and by a few I mean like $200 max for a TON of wearables, furniture is a different story) than have at it!  Good luck! 4951

Price a little higher than you want! People always ask you to take less and some will act like they don't understand and offer you next to nothing. And, you will need a set or two of extra eyes. We have had things walk off before. Good luck snd have fun with it. 4951

I have only held one garage sale. I priced stuff super cheap because whatever is left I either have to put away in the house or lug off to good will. I want everything gone!Clothing ended up selling each piece for $1.  Shoes $2 or $3 for an expensive pair. It was all kids clothing and shoes but everything sold.I also had a box of free items. Grab an item out the box after you bought something. I had everything laid out on tables. Nothing on the ground. It was fast and furious!  4951

@concrete500:
What kind of profit are you talking about?  There is no profit in a garage sale unless everything was given to you.

As everyone else said, $1.00 for clothes, $2 or $3 for shoes will sell.  And yes, you need to watch.  I had a lady in NY steal my scissors I was putting price tags out with when I told her they weren't for sale and another time in NJ I had a lady walk off with a bunch of costume jewlery in her pocket.  I just sat on the steps as she went to walk away and asked when she was paying me.  She put it all back.

Good luck on your sale. 4951
