So I scheduled an appointment for Friday with Carmax service department. My caravan doesn't start sometimes. I have jumped it but it's not the battery. Messing with the transmission seems to be key. Plus I need an oil change and I hear a lot of wind noise when driving so I want to window and door seals checked.

Just to look at the van for the starting issue is $65, the oil change is $33 and to look at the seals is $55. Geez!
I have a warranty through them, I have never had to use it before so I don't know if I am wasting my time at Carmax or not.

Since you have a warranty and an issue that you aren't sure of, I'd take it there. 4951

Chryslers are FAMOUS for having faulty TIPM's.... it may be what is causing your intermittent starting problem. If I were a betting woman, and I am, I would bet that's the problem or at least a big part of it.  4951

@QueenB: I looked up what a TIPM issue is.  That is scary stuff if the engine shuts off in the middle of driving down the freeway.  Geez, it's a $1500 issue to fix too.  I should of got a Honda or Toyota Mini van.  Too scary for me.  4951

@foxymama: Boy it sure is scary! Last I knew there was a nationwide shortage of those modules. I hope they have some if that's your vehicle's problem!

Sound cheap for me!

It costs me about 50 for an oil change, and 100+ for new seals , don't want to think about tray issue. 4951

No clue what tipm is but about to google...i have a 97 dodge van with same issue; driving down highway and it just dies (as if someone just turned it off)....ive had it in 3 (4 including having it towed to shop this afternoon) times for this and still not fixed! They've claimed it to be fuel pump, catalytic converter, fuses etc and like i said...still not fixed? Its super scary when you hit 70 on 59, driving down middle lane and ta da! It shuts off...sometimes starts right back others it can take 15 min? So scary and so frustrating .....not to mention the money thats gone into having it "fixed"!!!! 4951

@mrnice: I don't believe Chrysler products had the TIPMs in 1997 but I'm not positive on that. Perhaps you might want to ask your service advisor.

@mrnice: Having had this issue with TWO different Dodge vehicles, I'd like to hazard a guess. It's your computer. The computer faultily reads the engine temperature to be hazardous. Then, it shuts down the fuel line to the gas tank to prevent an explosion. It turns off, you sit, the computer resets, and when you turn it back on, it reads at normal temperatures and allows the fuel line to flow. Replacing the computer is about $500, but Dodge wants $1500 to "program" it, and only Dodge dealers can do that. Yes, I'm the one that the vehicle just dies on as I drive down the road. It's not every Dodge that does this, but one time with us it was a Caravan, and the second time it was a Durango.

Had a 77 and an 87 Chrysler product that did the same thing. Numerous trips to Dodge dealers...never resolved problem!

Have a 2013 dodge ram that never wants to start if temperature is above 82. Had it to shops in Denver last year several times... Never resolved problem!

Works great in cold weather.

Can't wait for hot weather... 4951

@foxymama: Yeah, that happened to me when I had a Dodge Colt, from the time of the purchase I had problems with  the transmission. I swore I would never by a Chrysler, Pymouth, Dodge, Ford, Buick, Chevrolet, Regal, Cutlas, vehicle again in my life. Honda products all the way!!!! 4951

@bubbleyes72: did you take it to the dealership or an auto repair place to have it looked at?  Any answers given?

@foxymama: CarMax warranty is a service agreement, they charge a check out fee then if the component is covered under the service agreement then you pay a deductible to have the vehicle repaired, some are 0, 50, 100, I've even seen 200 $ deductibles. Also have seen some that would only pay up to a certain dollar figure. If it's not a covered item then you are liable for the initial diag fee plus any fees that are related to you either fixing the vehicle or declining the repairs. If this issue is what the others are saying then I would go to the dealer, they will honor the CarMax service agreement, they have the proper diagnostic equipment to program such items. CarMax "services" all brands so their mechanics might not have the latest tools and have the latest information that a manufacture dealership would have.$33 for an oil change sounds a little high to me.

@Mccrj: The dealership honors the CArmax extended warranty?
