A recent chlamydia outbreak at a small west Texas high school with no official sex education policy appears to be much smaller than initially reported, according to state health officials. Despite statements from the Crane Independent School District superintendent citing 20 confirmed cases of the sexually transmitted infection among the nearly 300 students at Crane High School, reports now indicate that the “epidemic” was actually much smaller. But that’s still a problem. I wonder how many of the teachers got it? 4951

Big or small, abstinence-only policies DO NOT WORK!! Teach the kids to be responsible but give them the information they need 4951

A big part of sex-education should be on preventing STDs.  I don't think the kids (or teachers) at that school will need to be reminded about using condoms now. 4951

"abstinence-only policies DO NOT WORK!"Explain how someone can catch an STD while abstaining.You abstinence haters love to say "it didn't work" when people have sex and then contract diseases.  100% certain that the people who contracted the STD's didn't abstain.Your logic is ridiculous.  It's like claiming keeping a gun unloaded doesn't stop someone from getting shot after someone put a bullet in a gun and then shot someone. 4951

@fcabanski: What is ridiculous is believing that human beings will abstein from sex after puberty. The logic is simple: You can teach abstinence all you want but it won't happen. When (not if) those kids who are taugh to abstein have sex they are not prepared and thus are more vulnerable to disease and unwanted pregnancies. Look at the stats. Teen pregnancy and STD cases are higher in the bible belt.

@fcabanski:

Can't argue with that logic.

So when someone is taught to abstain, then doesn't(which they won't) and they get an STD, telling them at that point that they wouldn't have it if they had just abstained is incredibly helpful. everyone loves to hear "I told you so"

Telling some kids not to do something just becomes a challenge to them. 4951

@fcabanski: "abstinence-only policies" =/= "abstaining"
All you end up with are a bunch of horny teenagers...clearly a populace known for their critical thinking...that are ignorant to how STDs work and how much one time bumpin-uglies with the wrong person can impact the rest of their life.  4951

@shodan66:

It's not just horny teenagers out there getting/giving these gifts. Grown adults are out there spreading it around. I don't know where but I read once that the HPV2 is rampant in the senior citizen crowd..those People WERE taught to abstain. 4951

@NewToTexas:

In other words, 20 is really not that much more than their normal chlam rate.

In that little country town what else is there to do? 4951

Failure rates vary from theory to practice.

In theory, abstinence is 100% effective. In practice, not so much. Because humans are not perfect beings.

That is why *only* teaching abstinence is not wise. 4951

Nobody said don't teach other elements.  But if you set the goal "kids will have sex", if you teach kids "if it feels good do it", if you teach kids that relationship=sex,  then kids will have sex.  Abstinence is the only 100% effective method to avoid unwanted pregnancies and STD's.People who abstain and then enjoy sex with one married partner don't have to deal with STD's.  They don't contract them. 4951

@fcabanski:

Nobody sta that as the goal!! It's just a realistic statement of fact! Another fact...it does feel good, do you suggest we lie?. If we don't teach our kids that a healthy relationship does involve a healthy sex life then we are attempting to raise repressed unhappy adults that WILL have problems later in life.

Not one person has suggested people only teach to go out and have sex. That's not responsible. 4951
