True Story, Back in the 80's when I was working on MAINFRAME computers (before PC's) a co-worker was "testing" a change to the purchasing system. He asked what he should order on the test system. So a couple gather around, and we decided he should order 250 of those orange cones. They never order any (because they were only used within the plant for warning area) so he says 250! Shoot, I'll order 1,000! It's the test system, it goes nowhere.5 weeks later they wanted to know where to deliver the 1,000 orange cones IT ordered.True Story.
@FoFa: When I was transferred to Houston, my job was a Corporate Functional System Administrator for a new main-frame Computerized Maintenance and Materials Management System (CMMMS). It allowed workers to order parts from an electronic work request. Once ordered, if the material is not already in stock, it automatically issues a purchase order. One guy was preparing for a turnaround and needed a lot of large plastic garbage bags. He ordered 500 because any unused ones could go back to our warehouse. However, he didn't realize that they came in a huge roll at 200 bags/roll and each order was for one roll. Yep, he had ordered 500 rolls or 100,000 bags! Fortunately, someone caught the error before it got ordered!BTW, that old main-frame system got replaced after just 6 years of service. It got replaced with the server based SAP system. I never understood why we didn't go server based in the first place.edited: The main-frame CMMMS system was first loaded in 1992. I worked on it from 93-97. So as soon as we completed installation at all of our US facilities, they were looking for its replacement.
