I remember back in the 80's when Fructose was touted as a "healthy" sugar. Turns out it is not the demon being portrayed today, right up there with gluten. Turns out the amount of sugar is the problem, not so much the type of sugar;The Myth: "High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is more fattening than regular sugar is."The origin: In a 1968 study, rats that were fed large amounts of fructose developed high levels of fat in their bloodstreams. Then, in 2002, University of California at Davis researchers published a well-publicized paper noting that Americans' increasing consumption of fructose, including that in HFCS, paralleled our skyrocketing rates of obesity.What science really shows: Both HFCS and sucrose—better known as table sugar—contain similar amounts of fructose. For instance, the two most commonly used types of HFCS are HFCS-42 and HFCS-55, which are 42 and 55 percent fructose, respectively. Sucrose is almost chemically identical, containing 50 percent fructose. This is why the University of California at Davis scientists determined fructose intakes from both HFCS and sucrose. The truth is, there's no evidence to show any differences in these two types of sugar. Both will cause weight gain when consumed in excess.The bottom line: HFCS and regular sugar are empty-calorie carbohydrates that should be consumed in limited amounts. How? By keeping soft drinks, sweetened fruit juices, and prepackaged desserts to a minimum. 4951

That's like the promotion of margarine over butter.  They have exactly the same amount of calories, and now we've found that hydrogenated oils in margarine are worse than the cholesterol from butter.  The same with sugar..... moderation in amounts is key. 4951

HFCS is worse for the body of than sugar. No amount of industry sponsored research will ever change that. 4951

remember that if you are eating prepackaged frozen meals or packaged meals from boxes, you ARE getting lots more of those hfcs and sugars and sodium than you would be getting if you were doing your own cooking 4951

Exactly @FoFa, it is all the same.My Granny grew up eating bacon and eggs for breakfast, some type of fried meat and veggie, with homemade biscuits for lunch, and then the same for dinner.  She did this everyday, until she was 95.  But she was active every day, and a small woman.  No major health issues.  Moderation in everything, and daily exercise.  All the nonsense about this or that being bad, is all a fad.  People just need to use a little common sense.

@Fallon:

Actually some things are bad, the chemicals they use in foods. Eat real food. Like real butter, not margerine, real eggs, not boxed eggs, real bacon, not this bs they make that you don't have to cook or refrigerate. Real chicken without growth hormones, not those nasty mcnuggets and any other mystery meat. Know your food. 4951

I eat pretty healthy but I still love McNuggets every so often. I purposely avoid reading anything that tells me what is in them. Ignorance is bliss. 4951

@BusyMommy: If table sugar is 50% Fructose, and HFCS-45 is only 45% fructose, how does that figure?
The remainder of either is still glucose.ANDFruit contains a natural sugar called fructose. Unlike sucrose, or table sugar, fructose does not cause abrupt fluctuations in your blood sugar levels because your body digests it more slowly than sucrose, according to researchers of a study published in 2008 in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 4951

HFCS is the equivalent of margarine. It can only be made in a factory and our bodies are not designed to deal with it. 4951

Exactly. But I think that concept is too advanced for the average American. The mercury content is another major cause for concern. 4951

Moderation and portion control are very different topics than real foods versus factory "food products".

HFCS and margarine are both factory food products factory food products should be consumed minimally at most and preferably not at all.

Real foods like butter and honey should be consumed in moderation. 4951

@Francita: While I think processed foods are generally not as good for you as unprocessed, I'm not sure how much impact it really has.  Cases in my family are:  Grandmother and grandfather, never had any processed food, non-smokers, died of heart attacks in their 50's.  Other grandmother, lived to 90, was not a processed food eater, had colon cancer in her 50's, smoked lucky strikes for almost 70 years, died of lung cancer.  Wife's side of family:  Grandmother lived to mid-80's, lived on farm, all food home grown/raised/butchered, died from heart troubles.  Grandfather lived to mid-80's, same farm, died of colon cancer.  These represent a small sample size, but point to little direct relationship between food and longevity.  Genes are a big factor.

@buffaloglenn:

My personal thought with a small amount of limited research is that processed foods play a role in obesity, which does cause other illnesses. Then like your family, and one side of mine, genetics are a factor. In my family if cancer doesn't kill you in your early 60's, you will be pushing 100 before you meet your time. I don't recall anyone dying in their 70"s or 80's. 4951
