Church Search

So my family & I have recently been searching for a new church. Our pastor from the church we went to in the woodlands went on hiatus while looking for a new church space & a new space was never found. Then the non-denominational church we were going to in Kingwood started referring to Jesus as Yahweh, incorporating Hebrew much more heavily into services, & getting in touch with Hebrew roots; which is fine & all, it's just not for us. I was raised catholic & DH was raised southern baptist, so we're just looking for a common ground of a non-denominational church in the area. Children's ministry (elementary age) is very important to us as well. Looking for something in the Atascocita/ Kingwood/ Humble area. Somewhere that focuses on the message rather than bells and whistles (as was our experience with fellowship of the woodlands IN the woodlands.) 4951

Shucks I posted my response in ADC but I think you will see it. The only recommendation is to follow your heart and soul in this subject and talk it over with the family and come into a consensus. 4951

Been going to Kingwood Church of Christ for a while...since I met my wife.  No complaints.  Preacher Scott is a good guy and in touch.   4951

We recently started attending Woodridge Baptist on Kingwood Dr back in February.  They have an excellent youth following and my 10 year old loves it.

I was brought up Catholic but as @fallon said, I am not impressed with the 2 options for Catholic church's around here.

I have actually been attending bible study classes which I never thought I would.  My in-laws had been trying to get me to join their church in Spring for years.

Woodridge does alot for the community also.  It's something to try out.  If you don't like it, then you move on to the next.  Everyone seems very friendly and they always make you feel like you belong.  The youth pastor is great with the kids and remembered my DD's name the 2nd time we went. 4951

@Heathur I go to Good Shepherd Episcopal on WHD.  I was raised Catholic too. I find it to be very similar to Mass, but different enough to where it is the perfect mix of traditional and contemporary.  They offer different types of services so you can chose the one that is right for you. They have a great children's ministry as well.  The teen group is very active, and I know it's a long way off but those days will be here for your DD in no time.  Give it a try!  I absolutely love it there.  4951

@topcat:

Our son attends Mothers day out at Good Shepherd and I went to the 10:15am service yesterday since the student/teacher picnic was yesterday. I'm Baptist but I will say it was a good sermon and an enjoyable service. My wife was raised Episcopalian and would love to go there full time. The MDO program is fantastic too. 4951

I know the feeling. We are Anglican and have not found our church home here yet. My hubby is not excited about going to a Baptist church but we have gone a couple of times to 1st Baptist church in Kingwood. Very nice curch and the people were warm and welcoming he just has some issues with some of the teachings of the Baptist church as a whole.

Just keeping going to different churches as you feel lead and you will find where you need to be. 4951

@Heathur, good luck.  Like @CBP210 said, it will be a matter of going to one Church after the other.  It is hard to find a Church sometimes. We are Catholic, and I am not impressed with our choices here.  I miss LA on this for sure.  I had several churches to chose from.  I was a member at one, but we had so many in BR that I could go to a different one every Sat/Sun.I could chose the time of the Mass I wanted, and what Priest we liked.  I really miss that.  Here, the new Church has awful acoustics, and I can't understand one of the Priests.  I just get so irate when I go, lately I don't even waste my time. I hate that too. I loved to go to daily Mass in LA, but that isn't an option here like it was there.  They have one time, here during the week, and it is rarely a good one for me.  In LA, I had several times to chose from.

@Fallon: Sounds like you are attending a St Mary Magdalene mass with the new Nigerian priest. I can barely understand his accent.

@CBP210, not St. Martha's.  The Priest is wonderfully nice.  Just extremely hard to understand.  He is from the Phillip. I think.  And he does try.

@Fallon: Oh ya I remember him he used to preach a few times at St Mary but after we lost Father TJ he went back to St Martha. They are all not bad but wish we had good speakers with charisma like Father TJ.

I'm just looking for a church that DH & DD like more than anything. I honestly don't think there IS a church out there that's right for *me*.
As I first stated, I was raised catholic. That is what I've known the majority of my life, so when I go to baptist and even some non denominational churches and experience things like standing and singing poppy KSBJ sounding songs for the first 45 minutes straight of the service, it just doesn't feel like real church to me. I'm used to singing the same catholic hymns that even my grandpa sang when he was a little boy, that everyone knows by heart and doesn't need a projector for. A few hymns spread throughout mass. I like going to church for the message, not to sing so much that I'm praying that THIS is the last song... but it seems like it never is, lol. BUT I understand how catholicism might not seem appealing to jump into to an adult who didn't grow up this way.
It's odd to me when I'm in some baptist or non denomination service and someone is randomly filled with the spirit of the Holy Ghost and starts shouting "yes lord, God is good!" or something in the middle of the sermon. Now, don't get me wrong. I AGREE wholeheartedly & am thinking that on the inside! That sort of thing just doesn't happen in mass, so it's not that it's wrong or bad, just strange to me because it's not what I've known my entire life. Talking while the priest was talking was disrespectful in mass.
And I think it's great that so many churches are so involved, but a lot of newer churches just seem a lot more... pushy? Than Catholic Church! "Yes I enjoyed the non denomination service, but this was my first time even visiting and I'm not interested in hosting a women's luncheon or organizing a youth lock in. I just want to slip out quietly because again, I was just visiting."
BUT Catholicism isn't for everyone and there are certain things about it that I'm not crazy about myself which is why I haven't been pushing it heavily on my own bunch, plus DH literally falls asleep in mass. And he was raised baptist so he doesn't know the prayers or responses or order of things in mass, so I guess I understand. I dunno. As long as I can find a church with a good pastor who delivers solid messages weekly where there's also a great youth program, I can put my own issues aside. Emoticon 4951
