Middle DD got hit in the eye with a sweet gum ball yesterday (names withheld to protect the guilty) and it was swollen this morning. I applied moisturizing drops shortly after it happened, and she said it felt better initially. Are those things toxic? Or is it more likely just that her eye was scratched? I couldn't find anything on Google search other than they are not harmful to animals if eaten.

@Burnsway, before I take her to the opthamologist tomorrow morning, do you or @bp2018 have something I should try? 4951

Google says not toxic, but the spiky parts can cause problems because, well, they are spiky.Punctures and scratches and even twisted ankles are the norm. 4951

Just pulled up four of them when planting roses. I'm not even sure how they ended up behind my deck.

I hope your daughter will be okay, having the eyes be irritably has to be discomforting... 4951

@Mahm:  Her eye is most likely scratched. However, it could have left some debris in her eye which will further irritate the eye and possibly cause an infection.  An eye doctor will flush the eye and give you an ointment to soothe the eye and help it heal. 4951

I HATE those things!  I refer to them as balls of death.  I like to hang my laundry out on the line when its nice and I then to be barefoot a lot, stepping on those things will literally kill you.  We are planning to take that tree down soon I hope! 4951

The drops keep her comfortable for a little while, but the pain keeps coming back. I even tried one of those eyelid scrubbing wipes this morning and switched her to a more intensive eye drop. She was walking around with her hand over her eye for an hour or two then decided to try to keep it open more. I think the blinking helps some, but I still see a trip to the doctor in her future. 4951

@Mahm:  Back when I scratched my eye, my wife worked for an Opthamologist.  He called in an Rx for me.  It hurt very bad and I couldn't keep it open.  I put the ointment in, my wife put a bandage over the eye (so I would keep it shut), and I felt much better the next morning. Hopefully your daughter will feel better in the morning.  If not, a doctor would be a wise move.

Lavender mixed with coconut oil to help with bruising and swelling. Frankincense and Mel, for skin irritation. Very diluted pan away for discomfort.Joy oil  for emotional support so she doesn't seek out revenge.....lol All of these are in the every day oils kit.NO OILS IN THE EYE.......EVER....place the diluted oils around the  cheekbone under the eye and eyebrow area....the oils will find their way through the skin to area needing healing. Never put oils IN the eyes or ears....EVER 4951

@Mahm: Earlier this year we had one of our foster dogs scratch my DD in the eye, on accident of course.  We went to Vision Source and they were able to do a full exam and prescribe medicated eye drops for her.  They were very good and thorough and I would recommend them to anyone.  Call early this morning so they can fit you in.  They will take your medical insurance for this so make sure they accept the insurance carrier you have.   You'll need to get a patch for her eye as well.  Walgreens has them fairly inexpensively.

@Mahm: How is your daughters eye today?

@Retired_Engineer:

Swelling has gone down. @bp2018 brought some stuff over to help with that. Drops have reduced the redness and she says it doesn't hurt anymore except in bright sunlight. So I think she's going to be fine. But I'll definitely keep watching for signs of infection. 4951
