First spring/summer in Texas.  While every day I'm excited at what new plants and flowers are blooming in my yard,  I'm less than thrilled at all my new bug friends.  Last night I opened the front door (front steps are wood) and there were 7 HUGE SLUGS crawling around.  Oh LORD these things are nasty looking!  I'm not afraid of bugs (are slugs a bug or an animal?) but OMG they are gross.  Hate to kill them if they eat spiders or mold or something.  What is their purpose, and am I stupid for salting them to death? 4951

Slug is a common name for an apparently shell-less terrestrial gastropod mollusc. The word "slug" is also often used as part of the common name of any gastropod mollusc that has no shell, has a very reduced shell, or has only a small internal shell (this is in contrast to the common name snail, which applies to gastropods that have a coiled shell large enough that the animal can retract its soft parts fully into it). Slugs play an important role in the ecosystem by eating decaying plant material and fungi Most carnivorous slugs on occasion also eat dead of their own kindMost species of slugs are generalists, feeding on a broad spectrum of organic materials, including leaves from living plants, lichens, mushrooms, and even carrion] Some slugs are predators and eat other slugs and snails, or earthworms. Slugs can feed on a wide variety of vegetables and herbs, including flowers such as petunias, chrysanthemums, daisies, lobelia, lilies, daffodils, narcissus, gentians, primroses, tuberous begonias, hollyhocks, irises, and fruits such as strawberries.[They also feed on carrots, peas, apples, and cabbage that are offered as a sole food source. 4951

I am glad that I am not a slug.Interesting fact from Wikipedia:Slugs are hermaphrodites, having both female and male reproductive organs.[10] Once a slug has located a mate, they encircle each other and sperm is exchanged through their protruded genitalia. A few days later, the slugs lay around thirty eggs in a hole in the ground, or beneath the cover of an object such as a fallen log.Apophallation is a commonly seen practice among many slugs. In apophallating species, the penis curls like a corkscrew and during mating, it often becomes entangled in the mate's genitalia. Apophallation allows the slugs to separate themselves by one or both of the slugs chewing off the other's penis. Once its penis has been removed, the slug is still able to mate using only the female parts of its reproductive system.[10] 4951

Nasty.  I was just talking to my DH about this last night.  Took the dog out side and there was one climbing the drain pipe and another making it's way across the outside of the gutter.  All I keep thinking is one is going to fall on my head and I'm gonna freak.

I never even saw them here before and I've been here almost 9 years.  Back in N.J. we used to pour salt on them and watch them shrink.  Gonna have to get me a bottle of bleach spray like @ray said.  They are nasty and leave that nasty slime line behind them.  Gross!! 4951

I like the salt routine myself. But you can bait them with a small jar half filled, and buried most of the way, with beer and placed like in your flower bed. 4951

Yep they're gross that's for sure, and  of course this morning I'm cleaning up dead slug slime.  In the event you didn't know this - you can not sweep it up.   I've got some of that weird yellow fungus growing out front too.  Maybe tonight I'll catch a couple and throw them on that.  I can't quite figure out what they're after crawling around my front entry 4951

Considering they are basically just homeless snails...yeah, they are pretty low on the food chain. Apparently they have to become homeowners before they can become a staple of French cuisine. 4951
