In order to maintain their promise, the Martins provided large
sandwiches to the strikers. Bennie Martin said, "We fed those men free
of charge until the strike ended. Whenever we saw one of the striking
men coming, one of us would say, 'Here comes another poor boy.'"For the complete history of the Po-Boy:http://www.poboyfest.com/ 4951

Those girls look like Chalmations:  CHALMATION - Someone from Chalmette, a city in St. Bernard
Parish that's part of the New Orleans metro area, often called "Da Parish."
Out-of-towners often pronounce it with the hard "ch" sound as in "charge".
It's more like <shall-MAY-shen> or <shall-ME-shen>, and the city
is pronounced <shall-MET>.

Once occasionally used as an insult; many New Orleanians had a low opinion of Chalmette.
However, given the horrendous devastation of St. Bernard Parish brought on by MR-GO
and the failed levees following Hurricane Katrina, and the outpouring of grief and warm feelings to the people
of Da Parish, it is considered gauche to make fun of Chalmations these days. 4951

@beastmode: I used to go to an unusual store in Chalmette.  The left side was a jewelry store and the right side was a gun store.

@Retired_Engineer: I resemble that remark! I am a Chalmation born and raised. The gun and jewelry store was still there pre-Katrina. I don't know if they came back or not.

@DVaz:  Yes, they were.  One of my neighbors in Laplace liked to go shrimping.  Once he filled his freezer, he would sell the shrimp (all sizes) for $1/lb.  We would stock our freezer and my dad would drive down and fill his ice-chests.While shrimp po-boys are among my favorite, I also love catfish, oyster, roast beef, and soft-shell crab.  Nothing healthy like turkey or chicken! Now I'm craving fried oysters!

We also call people from Chalmette -  Charmers pronounced chawmas.  I think because they had a dance team in the parades called the Chalmette Charmers.  4951
