Mistake #1- not having him neutered. Intact dogs ( and cats) will mark their territory.

Mistake #2- leaving puppy pads laying around. IMO puppy pads are the bane of housebreaking. Dogs should not be allowed to go in the house- period. At 8 months he should be completely house broken. Guess what that puppy may find that someday your brand new carpet reminds him of the puppy pad- OR that the area with the puppy pads will be his toilet even if there are no puppy pads. I personally find that using puppy pads is very confusing to the dog- he's allowed to go to the bathroom inside- but he's not. My dd had a heck of a time getting her Pom potty trained- because she used pads. Finally at a year old de buckled down- started crating the dog and taking it outside every hour to go potty and then give it a treat if it did. It took a while but now it's trained. It is a time consuming process but if you don't do it now I predict you will be rehoming the dog. No one wants a dog the isnt housebroken. 4951

Train him to go outside. Stay outside with him until he does his business (may take a while) and reward him the first few times he does with treats. After a while, a simple "Yay good boy!" and some pets will be enough. Getting him fixed will probably also solve most of the issues. 4951

How do you stop a dog from "revenge" peeing? My daughter's dog makes it a point to go pee on my son's chair.... They can put the dog in her room during the day, no peeing... Come home, let the dog outside to do his business... He still comes back to my son's room for a spritz or two.... 4951

My female did the same thing when we first got her.  She was 7 weeks old. Someone told she was marking her territory.  For almost a year I always took her out on a leash and even now when I take her out back I praise her everytime she goes and she knows she gets a treat when we go inside.  The last accident we had was when she got over excited that someone came to the house about a year ago and she got over excited.  She P's when men pay attention to her for some reason.  Weird. 4951

@caroline7327: If a dog is doing this then the dog should NEVER be left to its own devices. This is what I'd do with any new dog that comes into my house. First off each dog has its own crate and that is where the dog is unless directly under my supervision or outside. Now directly under my supervision is on leash attached to me. As I move from room to room and chore to chore the dog is right beside me. There is off leash time and play time but the dog is always within reach. Depending on the dog and my trust in it- after a couple of weeks- it will get some unsupervised time-5-10 minutes. Then we progress until I am completely convinced to dog is reliable. However the dogs are always crated when I leave the house. Is it THE biggest Pain in the ***???? Yep- you bet. Do any of my dogs mark or have accidents in the house ??? Nope.
I take that back- TJ doesn't have a crate- having proved his reliability when he was a pup- and he had an accident last year when he had a reaction to a medicine. And I do anticipate problems as the cancer takes over so I am prepared to deal with that. But for me no healthly puppy or dog should be going in the house. Guess it's just my thing

@Heather...all male dogs should be neutered between 5 & 6 months of age , they will not "mark" their territory once they are "fixed". Hopefully you have not waited too long to have him "FIXED". 4951
