Anyone have experience with them.?  I'm thinking the new porch could provide quite a bit for watering my plants - assuming we have any rain once it gets hot.  Right now I have a rain chain and a 5 gal bucket, but a row of those doesn't seem to be the look I want! 4951

I've thought about rain barrels too, but I worry about mosquitoes.

With the price of city water getting so high combined with the sewer taxes associated with it, I'm thinking a cistern is the way to go.

A person could probably buy a large metal or concrete septic tank, bury it in your yard and run the drains from your gutters to the tank.

Our old farm house used to have diverted in the downspouts to either direct the water to the cistern or to grade.

Of course you would have to deal with city and HOA permits, but it may be worth it.

Let us know if you decide to pursue this thought. 4951

City of houston made them illegal to have, cause it's not your water to keep. You Must get water through them.....

....I say **** them, put as many as you can get away with!

@elguapo:

That sounds like the city.

They don't want people holding water because they won't sell as much. Also, they won't be able to charge you as much for handling the run-off from you buildings.

Some States are trying to tell people that they want to install water meters on private wells so they can track water consumption. I say it's the first step to taxing water individuals pump out of the ground.

@angiekaye:
Oh yes, I was on a Soil and Water Committee in Missouri and all pond plans and permits had to be evaluated to ensure that ground downstream would not endure unwarranted hardship due to restricted water availability.
That's one case I'm aware of.

a neighbor put in an underground tank that had a faucet & pump on top & he waters his yard all year  with the water it catches . I have no idea how large the tank is or who did the work for him , but he like it . We do not have an HOA here so no problems there. He did have to call the water company  plus the gas & electric company to come out & mark where their lines ran before they could start digging.   Good luck on what ever you decide. 4951

hmm...I've thought about setting up some system to collect "gray water" from the washing machine too.I'm fairly sure the city would frown on that.... 4951

@WJo: Normal people, not like the people & HOA here.   I never lived in an HOA before and never had a problem with bad neighbors. Lame excuse! Yet alot people complain about neighbors & want the HOA to act on their behalf & nothing gets done. Then they complain the HOA does nothing! But they keep paying these folks to do nothing........ Before anyone says anything my house is on the market!

I had a rain barrel at my last house. 55 gallon. Purchased from Lowes. My first question is how would the city know you had a small rain barrel? Anyhoo, if you get one, I suggest you raise it up a foot or two off the ground so that when it gets to a lower level you still have enough flow from the gravity to flow through the hose. I loved mine, it was perfect for watering my large planters and hanging baskets and beds close to the house. We didn't have a sprinkler/irrigation system. I say go for it! 4951

@elguapo:  If rain barrels are illegal in Houston, then the City is participating in breaking the law!  The City sells rain barrels:http://www.greenhoustontx.gov/compostbinssale.htmlhttp://www.rainbarrelprogram.org/HoustonSams Club in Humble sells them too, as do all the DIY stores.  During my walks along the streets of Kingwood, I see many homes with rain barrels.So something does not jibe.  What am I missing?

@thegoodwife...I know all about the Hoa's in Kingwood , we lived there for 6 years & the only thing the HOA ever did was raise their fee every year without fail . We had an empty lot next to us & the weeds got so high it was unbelievable . We called the HOA so many times & sent in letters telling them the grass needed to be mowed. Finally we mowed it & the next day the inspector came out & said it looked "nice" & he saw no need to mow it again. We told him we mowed it & he said  it would eventually get mowed but if we felt the need to mow it that was our choice. So for 6 years we mowed it , our choice since we did not want 2 foot tall weeds growing next to our house. We sold the house with the HOA & we will never live where there is an HOA ever again. They serve no purpose in our books. 4951
