Awwwwww, you are gonna make me tear up over here. So glad i went. Mom really needed an advocate over there and i would have been going CRAZY over here with everything that went on. She is safe and sound at her rehab now though so that is all that counts. 4951

I had a similar experience with my mom's hip replacement. Her BP was incredibly low and she needed blood. Just kept passing out due to pain. Had a bloodclot. Couldn't even take two steps. I went certified nutso on them. 10 days in hospital and 20 days skilled nursing to follow. I couldn't believe home was their intention on day 3!

I know what you mean. She was getting dizzy all the time and her oxygen kept dropping low, not to mention they were not keeping up with her muscle relaxer so she was receiving more narcotics then she had to to control the pain. When they were talking about discharge home she hadnt even had a bowel movement yet. I had to ask for a suppository for her to get that moving. It was not a good experience at all, but on the bright side her rehab is taking good care of her so far and i have learned some valuable things to remember with my patients.

You might send her nurses some treats. We found mom received good care but cupcakes equaled even better care. 4951

@Nurse3: I'm so glad your home! And I'm so glad she had you there. I'm learning that different facilities do things so differently from one another! You just never know what to expect.

I may need some post appendectomy advice from you after you get some rest. 4951

Well one thing i can think of right off the bat is to press on the surgical area if he has to cough or sneeze. That can really hurt if you arent splinting the site.

As far as your mom, make sure they give her an incintive spirometer and have them teach her how to use it post surgery. She needs to use it about five times every hour or a couple of times whenever she sees a commercial on tv. It will help exercise her lungs so she doesnt get pneumonia after her surgery. 4951

This makes me laugh. My mom was told to use hers each time there was a commercial break. What they forgot to mention was it didn't have to be continuously throughout the entire break! She nearly hyperventilated.
