My old guy TJ probably has cancer. He has a swollen back leg and it swelled suddenly- I thought it could've been a bug or snake bite. The vet says he's pretty sure it's cancer- TJ isn't in pain and he would be if it was a bite. Of course TJ was his cujo self ( HATES the vet) and since he's 14 there's not much sense in poking and prodding and stressing the old guy too much. He got a couple of shots ( and nearly bit the vet - ( he slipped right out of my hold) just in case it is some sort of immune reaction.
I love all my fur babies but this one holds a real special place in my heart. We adopted him at 7 months from a shelter. He had been chained to a tree with a pinch collar for his whole life before the shelter. In the 11 months after we adopted him- 9/11 happened, my other 2 dogs had to be euthanized ( cancer and doggie altzheimer), my dh lost his job and found one here, my Moms cancer came back and she passed away 2 weeks before we moved here. This dog's fur was so wet because of all the tears I shed that year. Dang why do they have to go so quick. I know 14 is old for a lab mix but not nearly long enough for me. The next trip to the vet is gonna kill me!!! Doggie prayers appreciated ;( 4951

I'm so sorry! But people like you don't only just save dogs from disasters like getting hit by cars or starved from roaming the streets. You give them a real life and a real home. You train them and love them so they know how to BE a good dog. Then they become part of your family and part of a quality life. The best life they could ever have.Try not to see it as the end. It may not be.  See it as the fulfillment of the best life a dog could have. You did that. You should be proud of the life and love you so willingly gave him. He is special because of you. And to you as well. 4951

My old guy, who is deceased now had cancer on his paw, nose and in his ear, not deep in his ear. Had all removed and he was fine after each surgery. He was over 10 with all of that. When's it's on the outside of the body it wasn't all that bad. I can't imagine a vet can't deal with a dog who is a little vicious with the vet. I went to Loop 494 and the price wasn't all that bad.....Sorry to hear this about you furbaby.   4951

@Jpgurl:  Sorry to hear this.We will be facing that issue in the near future.  Our oldest is 16.  She's about half blind and half deaf.  She's lost a lot of weight but doesn't seem to be in any pain.  She loses control of her bowels and needs to be let outside at least once each hour or she has accidents in the house. We got her from Twyla's Friends.  She's mostly black lab.  Someone from Twyla's (@Lola?) saw the pregnant mother go into a brush pile at the front of Kingwood, then later saw that the mother had given birth.  The woman crawled into that brush pile to retrieve the pups.  The one we got was the runt of the litter, but we couldn't have asked for a better dog!  I try to tell myself that she's just a dog, but she's part of our family. 4951
