This is my first year trying to garden here. I just planted tomatoes and basil in pots since we don't have a sunny spot to plant in the ground due to the neighbors huge trees and our pool taking up a lot of real estate. How many hours of direct sunlight do you find you need to have good production here? I've already moved them once, because the first spot was more shaded than I realized. Love home grown tomatoes!! 4951

I also love home grown tomatoes but am a failure at growing them. Every time I tried, either the bugs, birds, or some sort of disease got them. 4951

I started mine from seed this year I recently planted about 50 plants. They look real nice.
They say 6-8 hours of full Sun. Keep your fingers crossed they produce. Might have enough to share. The kids eat them like they are going out of style. 4951

Cherry tomatoes do better in pots. I don't think you can give them took much sun. nutrients and water is harder. Here when gets hot, you have to water them 2-3 times a day. One of those continuous watering pots works really well. Birds have always been my biggest problem. Getting a cheap small radio, running during the day in the plant, others have told me works good. I have always grown them for my wife because I literally hate them. Worms you can just pick off, usually you don't need chemicals to control those. Support is a must. And none of that flimsy wire Crap, get something substantial. Wind, like during a storm can blew the pots over when their taller, so if you can wedge them in between other pots, that helps. Frankly, I always found fish emulsion to be the best fertilizer for them. Applied about twice a week. The good thing about that is it is impossible to burn the plants by applying took much like with miracle grow our other fertilizer of that type. 4951

I had a neighbor plant his toms under a canopy of trees. Dappled sun. His plants were loaded! Stick them in and around the perimeter of your pool beds among other plants, plant them deep, take off the lower two sets of leaves and plant in dirt up to the stripped leaves. 4951

If your tomatoes are flower during really hot weather, then shade is recommended during the hottest part of the day. If you have a spot where they can get sun until say noonish, that might work so they do not go through heat induced flower drop. And water as required, but make sure the top dries out between watering.Make sure they have good drainage. 4951
