When out to lunch today I noticed this couple with 3 children ages looked to be 12,9 and 6, when they were done eating the floor had more food on it then their plates. It was nasty ! They just up and left. So I just starting noticing people around me eating. Is it old fashioned  tor me to think that holding your fork correctly and not like a shovel, or putting your napkin in your lap or, sitting up and bring your food to you and not hanging over your plate too much these days for people to do and teach their children ? Table manners don't seem to be important anymore. Well as a parent that raised 2 children glad I taught mine manners all away around.  4951

Basic manners are becoming a thing of the past. Rude, crude and classless seem to be replacing it and becoming the norm. 4951

I have to agree. I have two girls 22 and 28. They were taught at a very young age.
I go out and sometimes I see kids eating, food on floor shoveling in mouth. It is very sad. Manners are a thing of the past I'm afraid. I do not mind children eating out I took mine out all the time and love children. I just think things are getting out of hand. 4951

I think it is a result of the breakdown of marriages. Step parenting/teaching step kids is one of the hardest things to do - especially true because dads don't usually notice things like manners. This is at least true for me if not others. My kids are taught, but no matter how hard I try, my step kids don't absorb anything I try to teach them. The only thing I can control is that I leave a large tip for the poor server that is left cleaning up the mess. 4951

Old fashioned is good. We were taught not only how to behave but also all the other things necessary to show proper manners when in public.

Today's generation believe we're stupid for "going out of our way to do such silly and stupid things", I see it every day. They consider it a waste of time and beneath them.

It's just another sign of the fall of what we used to be proud of.

I hate to say this, but it seems to be worse down here than in the upper Midwest. Don't know what's wrong but a lot of the youngsters just don't seem to care and they don't mind telling you so. 4951

I also think it is a part of the problem of families not sitting down to the dinner table together at home as much as they did in the past. That is where so much of the instruction of proper eating etiquette would take place back in the day. Mom and Dad would tell the kids to put the napkin in their lap, elbows off the table, don't eat with your mouth full, etc. These days eating in the car after buzzing through the drive-thru is the substitute for the family dinner table. 4951

Texas needs to enact a law to require parents to whip their kids ***es when they are getting out of hand in public settings. Apparently, "old fashioned became a fart in the wind."  4951

Adults are just as bad. I see people licking their fingers and picking their teeth. Who the heck raises these barbarians? 4951

@Safety44:

But wasn't today's generation taught by the previous generation? 4951

@BooBear: It depends on what is considered the "previous" generation.

@BooBear: Coming from you, I believe that the respect for others has been instilled in your kids and grand-children. It's this "lazy generation" that kills me. I seriously wish that Texas would enact a law requiring parents to keep there kids on a leash in public environments. We have enough crazy *** laws already....why not add another?
