Who did you use? Â We need to put one in soon (front & back). PM me the cost if you don't mind!
@aggiebutterfly:  I had Prime Lawn install my lawn sprinklers as part of a complete landscaping project for our front yard (plus sprinklers in the back yard). I live on a corner lot so it also included that area. They put in a total of 8 zones. It's divided into zones so the sprinklers see the correct water pressure. If they all came on at once, each sprinkler would just have a short dribble coming out. The zones run for whatever time you designate in a sequential manner.  I had three zones in the front, two in the side, and three in the back yard. Total was about $4,000 for the sprinklers. After the landscaping was done, I needed to water my lawn every day for awhile. I had some water bills of $800 for the first month or two. After that, I reduced the frequency and duration of the sprinklers being on.As others have mentioned, there is an advantage to installing a separate water meter just for your lawn irrigation system. Your house water bill includes sewage and drainage fees. Since there is no way to measure your sewage or drainage usage, they are pro-rated on the amount of water you use. For instance, this month, my house water consumption was $12, Sewer was $11 (94% of water), and Drainage was $8 (70% of water). total was $31 (all figures are rounded off). The amount for sewage actually varies and is usually anywhere from 80% to 120% of you water usage! I think there is a max cap of around $10 for drainage. So if you connect your water irrigation to your house meter, let's just say your water usage for house+lawn was $200, then you would also pay abt $190 for sewage, and $10 for drainage. Your total water/sewage/drainage bill would then be around $400 TOTAL. Now the downside of installing a separate water meter for lawn irrigation. You first have to order a second water meter from the city of Houston. From what I remember, figure $100-200. Then you have to have a HOUSTON APPROVED PLUMBER install the water meter. That's about $800. So a second water meter will cost you about $1,000. If you already have a sprinkler system, I recommend you have your sprinkler guy come and reroute the source for your sprinkler system from the house meter to the new meter. This may cost $100-200 depending on the distance involved. The sprinkler guys know to thoroughly flush all of the lines to get any dirt or grass out of the pipe so they don't clog up any sprinklers.Let's use the above example with a separate water meter. Your house meter uses say $20 of water, $20 for sewage, and $10 for drainage. Total house bill is $50. The rest of the water was for lawn irrigation, so $180 on the separate water meter. So the total for that month (with separate meters) is $50 + $180 = $230 TOTAL versus $400 with a single water meter, or a savings of roughly $170. So, you may pay off your investment of a separate water bill in less than one year (depending on your total water usage).I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
