@Love2Run: Everyone is different, yes, but everyone is the same in that following a prolonged period of sleep, cortisol levels rise and insulin levels drop. Â As a runner, I'm sure you're aware that cortisol is immunosuppressive and, in general, not something you want a lot of in your circulation in the absence of a stressor. Â Raising blood sugar levels and, thusly, insulin levels through waking calorie intake is a way to maintain insulin stability and diminish cortisol. Â Insulin is also known to have anabolic properties, which is another good reason to bring them up pre and post exertion.
